HVAC ductwork and piping insulation

Data centers rely on chilled water and liquid cooling systems, where cold surfaces can create condensation that may lead to electrical failures or structural damage. Key applications include chilled water piping, chiller units, tanks and vessels, and valves and fittings. 3M™ VentureClad™ 1577 and 1579 products provide durable jacketing with a zero permeability vapor barrier to help protect insulation, support energy efficiency, and simplify maintenance and repairs.

HVAC and Air Distribution

  • Ductwork: Large air-handling ducts, especially those in unconditioned spaces or plenum areas, require cladding to reduce thermal loss and improve energy efficiency.
  • Plenum Spaces: Areas under raised floors or above ceilings often house piping and ductwork that require specific jacketing to meet fire and smoke codes.
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs): External panels and internal components often use technical coatings or cladding to resist corrosion from humidity and airborne contaminants.

Fire Protection for HVAC

HVAC systems in data centers include ductwork, ventilation, and mechanical penetrations that pass through fire-rated walls and floors. If these openings aren’t properly protected, they can compromise compartmentation and allow fire, smoke, and heat to spread between critical areas. 3M passive fire protection solutions help restore the fire rating of these assemblies and support operational continuity, with wraps, sealants, and system-tested solutions for new construction and retrofit environments.

Fire Protection for cable trays, conduit and pipe penetrations

Modern data centers contain thousands of cable, conduit, and pipe penetrations passing through fire-rated walls, floors, and risers. Each penetration can create a pathway for fire, smoke, and toxic gases to move between spaces, making proper firestopping essential for compartmentation, uptime, and code compliance.

3M firestop solutions are engineered for mixed penetrants-power, fiber, communications, metallic pipe, and insulated pipe-and support fast, consistent installation in both new construction and retrofit projects while helping meet NFPA, IBC, UL, and ASTM requirements.

Essential solutions include sealants, intumescent wrap strips, endothermic protection materials, firestop pillows and blocks, and modular device-based systems designed to support frequent add/move/change activity in data center environments.

Fire Protection for critical circuitry

Critical power and data pathways support continuous data center operations. During a fire event, these systems must remain functional long enough to maintain emergency operations and protect mission‑critical equipment. 3M fire protection solutions help maintain performance, limit heat and smoke transfer, and safeguard high‑value electrical and networking infrastructure.

Engineered to accommodate complex tray geometries and allow future add/move/change work, these solutions support compliance with key fire containment standards and operational continuity requirements.

Essential solutions include endothermic protection materials, and accessories designed to secure and protect installations in demanding data center environments.

Fire Protection for construction joints

Construction joints-including head‑of‑wall, floor‑to‑floor, perimeter, and wall‑to‑wall joints-move due to building settling, thermal expansion, vibration, and live loads. In data centers, maintaining fire‑rated performance across these dynamic joints is essential for compartmentalization and business continuity.

3M joint‑protection systems are engineered to provide fire‑resistance while allowing movement, helping maintain the integrity of fire‑rated assemblies during normal building motion or equipment‑driven vibration. These solutions help designers meet stringent code requirements and assist contractors in installing reliable, consistent protection across long linear runs.

Essentiall solutions include sprays, and tape.
