Lightweight, high-strength flame and heat shielding and structural reinforcement for aerospace composites.
Proven in both civilian and military applications, 3M™ Nextel™ Ceramic Fibers and Textiles have long been used as flame and heat shielding materials in aircraft and spacecraft.
Nextel ceramic fibers and textiles meet some of the toughest thermal, mechanical and electrical performance requirements, including FAA criteria for aircraft firewalls and NASA standards for shuttle launch and re-entry. Nextel ceramic textiles can withstand extremely high temperatures and are also flexible and lightweight. They provide consistent and reliable performance in mission-critical applications from aircraft wiring insulation to engine firewalls and spacecraft micrometeorite shields. Nextel ceramic fibers are also used as structural reinforcements in advanced metal, ceramic, and polymer composites materials, imparting high temperature resistance for load-bearing applications.
Discover how nextel can be the best solution for your aerospace application.
With benefits such as strength, creep resistance, and an ability to withstand high temperatures, Ox-Ox ceramic matrix composites (Ox-Ox CMCs) are being used in an increasing number of demanding applications within aircraft jet engines like exhaust mixers, nozzles, and cones. These composites are made from 3M™ Nextel™ ceramic fibers and textiles, enabling new design possibilities within engines, as they can be shaped into complex structures that are more challenging for traditional materials like titanium and nickel alloys. Using innovative designs, Ox-Ox CMC parts can be used to create the next generation of more efficient, lighter weight, quieter engines.

Firewalls, fan cowls, engine struts and other jet engine components need to withstand a great deal of stress from high temperatures, vibrations, and flames. FAA fireproofing regulations require engine cowlings to withstand a flame of 2000ºF (1093°C) for 15 minutes without flame penetration. 3M™ Nextel™ ceramic textiles help manufacturers meet this requirement achieving the flame barrier test (no flame propagation), per ISO 2685 and FAR 25.856(a).
Compared to alternatives like quartz or glass, fire blankets made with Nextel ceramic fibers are lightweight and flexible, even after being exposed to high, continuous temperatures. This enables high performing fire protection even in tight, complex geometries.
