Butt splices for paper manufacturing

Whether for temporary splicing applications inside the mill, or permanent splices that go to your customers, butt splices are a good option for thick papers—or for passing through nips that don’t allow thick stacks of paper. For best performance, use a 3M butt splicing tape.
- Repulpable to prevent broke contamination from non-repulpable splice material (Repulpability determined according to TAPPI UM-213, Procedure A)
- High shear strength that won‘t slip at high web tensions—a problem that can leave exposed adhesive and can cause web breaking because of adhesive “blocking”
- Heat resistance to withstand high oven temperatures (typically associated with web printing), which helps reduce downtime at your customer due to splice failure
- FDA compliant 21 CFR 176.170 and/or 21 CFR 176.180 so the tape can be used on most food grade papers

Blue kraft paper with blue repulpable adhesive on an easy-release liner. Primarily used for butt splicing coated paper and board at the re-reeler and winders.
3M™ Repulpable Single Coated Splicing Tape 901

Designed primarily for uncoated papers. Used for butt splicing and taping down leading or trailing edges. A semi-bleached kraft paper coated with a light green repulpable adhesive.

Thin, strong, printable backing for butt splicing. Good for a wide variety of papers and temperatures. Blue repulpable adhesive on an easy release paper liner.

Blue, ultra-thin, printable/coatable cover tape ideal for coated and uncoated grades of paper. Strong, conformable backing for core starting, tabbing, roll closing, and zero speed butt splicing at the sheeter.
