Road Asset Management Systems and Data Collection
Road asset management systems provide comprehensive asset data for road maintenance crews and managers. Effective data collection methods make it possible to leverage this resource.
When does data collection happen?

Data collection is an ongoing process, but typically starts with creating an initial database on which to build. Asset data is collected in both day and nighttime conditions, because, while an asset may appear to perform in daylight, its nighttime reflective performance may be degraded. Ultimately, when an asset inventory includes up-to-date information, it’s easier to make data-driven decisions. So the best time to start collecting road asset data is now.
How is data collection done?

Data collection uses custom-equipped vehicles to drive between inspection sites. This vehicle features a GPS tracking device that captures geographic data on road asset locations. Data collection crews can use mobile devices to access the inventory database and provide asset updates quickly. Additionally, these teams use vehicle-mounted cameras to take high-resolution photos of assets. The images are uploaded to the road asset management system, so road authorities can visually analyze an asset once the initial inspection is complete.
Who is involved in data collection?

Transportation agencies work with data collection companies during the data collection phase to define the areas to be driven and to determine the assets and asset features to be recorded. Transportation agencies can upload the data collection on their own or work with an external agency to upload the data to the road asset management system.
What’s the next step after the data collection?

After the data is uploaded to the road asset management system, a comprehensive record of each asset is developed to allow the agency to maintain and track their assets. Records for each asset include:
- Geographic location of the asset
- The asset’s material properties, color degradation, reflectivity at night and most recent photograph if available
- The asset’s support type
- The asset’s age, last inspection or repair, upcoming tasks/maintenance, and scheduled replacement and cost to replace
Altogether, the system provides a total view of an asset inventory. This information can make it easier to calculate upcoming costs for asset replacements.
