Basic tools, like hand-held j-rollers, are simple ways to improve the manual tape application process. The next step to improve production is using process assists — simple mechanical or electrical tools. Using a process assist, like a 3M™ Straight Line Laminator, can help to increase productivity of manual applications.
Human operators push straight parts through a dispenser to apply 3M™ VHB™ Tape precisely while simultaneously applying final pressure. The laminator smoothly applies tape as a post or stiffener is guided through. Simply cut the tape at the end of the post or stiffener to complete the application.
Benefits of the 3M™ Straight Line Laminator include:
3M™ VHB™ Tape is a fast and easy-to-use method for attaching stiffeners and posts to panels in a variety of applications. The tough acrylic adhesive provides immediate strength with a long-lasting bond and can enhance the appearance of your finished product by eliminating rivets, screws and weld distortion. And now, the 3M™ Straight Line Laminator can even help further improve the accuracy and productivity of your application process.
The 3M™ Straight Line Laminator comes pre-configured for use with rectangular or square extrusions, but with the addition of a customer fixture, it can be used for z-bars, c-channels and other extruded designs. Consider the 3M™ Straight Line Laminator and 3M™ VHB™ Tape combination to attach stiffeners and posts for architectural panels, trailers, specialty vehicles, metal enclosures, and signage. (SPEECH) [MUSIC PLAYING] (DESCRIPTION) Logo, 3M in Collaboration with Vulkan Technic. Title, 3M Straight Line Laminator. How to set up. The 3M Straight Line Laminator is primarily used for posts or stiffeners. The applications are used in various markets, including box truck, trailer, office furniture, architectural panel, and metal enclosures. A large box sealed in plastic. Text, Laminator Unboxing. The outer plastic has been removed and the top of the box is open. Text, Your 3M Straight line Laminator comes packaged in a double walled box with the applicator and base inside. Arrows point to all four of the sides that have extra cardboard inserts. The product is in the center. Carefully remove the base from its packaging. The applicator sits in the box, along with a photo of the product and a small zippered bag with hardware. The base is separate and sits on bubble wrap. Attaching the applicator to the base. The roll in T-Nuts may already be assembled. Rectangular T-Nuts that are curved on one side are dropped into each of the three grooves in the base with the curved side down and the hole facing up and closer to the base. They slide in sideways and then maneuvered down to fit into the curved groove with the hole facing up. Once inside the track, they are too wide to lift back up. The T-Nuts are positioned with the center nut near the top and the two on either side straight across from each other with the tops even with the lower edge of the ruler. Attaching the applicator to the base. The L shaped bracket sits over the T-Nuts and an Allen wrench is used upright to tighten. The three screws are dropped in. Hand tighten screws Align the unit to 0 when assembling. A red arrow on the side of the bracket is pushed slowly until it lines up with the red zero on the ruler. Tighten the screws with the Allen wrench. Slide to attach applicator to the base by inserting Roll in T-Nuts. The applicator is positioned upright sliding down over the protruding T-nuts on the taller side of the bracket. Tighten the four screws with the Allen wrench, first lightly. The Allen wrench is turned to the short side and each nut is tightened further. A roll of adhesive with a red backer sits next to the base. Assembly inspection. Loosen the locking arms located on the legs of the base guide to adjust alignment. Arrows point to the black arms on each leg. Both handles should be tightened to the same number. Loosen the locking arm to the applicator to ensure that it moves freely in the vertical direction. The handle is turned down and the applicator slides. The arm is turned back up. Pull the locking pin, raise and lower the roller using the applicator handle to ensure the roller rotates freely. The pin at the bottom of the spring is pulled out and lowered down, then back up. Tape roll installation. The red backed tape is removed from its packaging. The center hole slides over the wheel at the top with the end of the tape facing up. Threading. The tape is pulled straight down with the red backer facing in toward the rollers. Its threaded under the first roller then under a small bar and up over the second roller, which is close to the bracket, then slid down between the second and third. Push the lever to slide tape between rollers. The lever is pushed forward, which allows the tape to slide over a small bar under the last roller. Tighten the width of tape. Another roller is textured and located directly in front of the middle roller. That is turned to the right until the tape is snug. Tighten locking ring to prevent movement. The ring is also textured and directly in front of the other. It's turned to the right until it is firmly against the last. A bar is lined up beneath the applicator. As it is pushed through, the adhesive adheres to it in a straight line. The red backer remains on the tape. A second bar is fed into the base. When the first reaches the end of the base, a blade is used to cut the adhesive between the two bars. 3M, Science. Applied to Life. Learn more at engage dot 3M.com slash straight line laminator.

Text, Insert the substrate into the base. Align the base alignment plate against the substrate. Press the plate against the substrate, keep in mind to press against the substrate to cause friction. Lower the applicator roller. Before starting the application operation make sure that the applicator is at the proper height. Feeding. Red tape is over an upper wheel and under the applicator roller next to it, and moves outward onto a substrate as the operator moves the substrate forward and sets another substrate in place behind it and feeds it through. In a close view, the tape holds the two pieces of the substrate together. Text, Cutting. The operator uses a blade to cut the tape at the junction, then slides the bar along the machine. He cuts the tape at another junction. He cuts at another junction, just under the applicator roller, then lowers a lever at the back of the wheel and roller and they raise up. Logo and text, 3M. Changing the location holes of the spring also changes the elongation which in turn increases the force of the application roller An individual with a gloved hand uses a pair of pliers to attach a small spring to an eyelet of a component. Once the spring is attached, a lever is pulled down, stretching the spring slightly. Text, Width adjustment, 3M Straight Line Laminator can easily adjust to various tape widths. Loosen the locking ring of the guide roller. An arrow points to a large center ring beneath the spring. Text, Turning clockwise or counterclockwise opens or closes the guide. Changing rollers. With a dual-pronged tool, a gloved hand removes a clamp at the end of a roller. The roller slides off the end, and a new roller is put in its place. The small black clamp is replaced at the end using the pronged tool. Text, Your laminator will come with 2 different wheels. Hard wheel: hard substrates; Soft wheel: bendable substrates. Changing the spring. One end of the spring is placed into a lower eyelet, then with pliers, the opposite end of the spring is hooked onto an upper eyelet.
