Design interns, in partnership with dedicated design supervisors, have the opportunity to work on two to four projects that represent real design challenges that 3M’s businesses are currently facing.
All interns will also have company networking, social impact and professional development opportunities, as well as design-specific learning and workshops.
A design internship is full-time and typically 10-12 weeks, starting in June and running through August.
The design internship program is based in our state-of-the-art design center at 3M’s global headquarters in Maplewood, MN.
Past design interns have been hired into full-time positions that focus on industrial design, graphic design, UX design and design research.
In addition to the professional development, interns will have opportunities to participate in volunteer events with local nonprofit groups and social and networking events.
The design internship program posts open positions January through March. Search key words “design internship” here.
Intern positions are also posted at select design schools and on niche job boards.
3M participates in select design school portfolio reviews and design career fairs. Design leaders conduct on-campus interviews with select intern applicants.
"My internship prepared me to join the team as a contributing team member the moment I started as a full-time 3Mer. I was able to jump into new domains and problems more easily because I knew the company and the team and had allies and mentors that could guide me." Shannon Vanderhill, UX designer, 3M Design
“The great thing about 3M Design is that they fully integrate you as a member of the design team. That really gave me a chance to see how an idea evolves from just an initial sketch, all the way through to concept renders, 3D models, prototypes, and to see a few of these products hit the market.” Doug W., industrial design intern, 3M Design
“Being able to design for real-world problems, but also with great people really brings this internship together.” Shabi K., design research intern, 3M Design
