3M Design Internship Program Overview

  • An internship position with 3M Design is a temporary assignment (typical 10-12 week, full-time schedule assignment) with 3M's Corporate Student Programs. Corporate Student Programs is designed to provide 3M with the opportunity to identify qualified candidates for regular employment, and to provide students with the opportunity to integrate their academic knowledge with work experience. As a Student Programs participant, you will develop skills and gain work experience in your field of study. We employ students in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, UX Design and Design Research for the summer to enhance the design function at the 3M Design Center, located in St. Paul, MN.

  • What are the details of the role?
    • 3M internships are paid.
    • Design interns are part of the larger 3M internship program.
    • 3M Design typically hosts 6-10 interns each summer.
    • Design internships may feed into full-time, entry-level roles.
    • Design interns complete three to four large projects and smaller projects as needed during their 10-12 week summer internship.
    • Intern projects represent business priorities and real design challenges faced by 3M businesses.
    • Interns will be recruited and hired based on the type of functional design talent needs identified by the business Design team.
    • Interns are assigned to one of the five 3M Business Group design teams or the company design team.
    • Design Interns are co-located within the 3M Design Center.
    • Each intern is assigned a supervisor and coach within 3M Design.
    • Design interns collaborate with other design interns as well as experienced design talent and leadership.
    • In addition to the company networking, social impact and professional development opportunities all 3M interns receive, Design Interns have relevant learning opportunities, workshops and fieldtrips as part of their internship experience.

  • 3M Design intern positions are posted at select design schools and on niche job boards. We participate in select design school portfolio reviews and design career fairs. To be considered for an internship position, students must provide a portfolio of design work which demonstrates their design skills. 3M Design leaders conduct on-campus interviews with select intern applicants.
  • Our goal is to be able to offer as many qualified interns as possible opportunities for future employment based on current business conditions.

  • What are the requirements?
    • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in graphic design, industrial design, product design, user experience design, design management or design research from an accredited University
    • Current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
    • Completed Junior year or higher of curriculum by date available to start internship
    • Strong coursework experience in illustration, visual branding, typography, photography, color and pattern. Coursework in print methods, sketching, 3D modeling and technologies a plus
    • Able and willing to provide a non-confidential portfolio of student/professional work for review
    • Positive attitude, team player
    • Effective ideation ability and strong visualization/sketching skills
    • Keyshot or other rendering software (ID) a plus
    • Prototyping and wireframe development (UX/UI)
    • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino, Solidworks and/or other platforms critical to design effectiveness and execution depending on the design discipline
