3M™ Polycarbonate Carrier Tape 3202R 2D Barcode Series combines the benefits of ultra small pocket holes, increased pocket open radius control and track and trace 2D barcoding with 3M technology in semiconductor thin package carrier tape applications. 3M’s precision process creates ultra-small (less than 0.01mm) pocket holes that prevent solder balls from sticking during transport. Plus, the ultra-small (<0.01mm) pocket opening radius and tight pocket tolerances help reduce component migration, tilting, misplacement and cracks. In addition, barcodes are applied to the tape, eliminating concerns about particles and related damage from die surface lasering, and helping enable traceability and other capabilities in applications where chips are too small for laser barcoding.

    Optical Precision Process – smoother advanced packaging transport

    As electronic components become smaller, thinner and more complex, 3M™ Polycarbonate Carrier Tape 3202R 2D Barcode Series helps reduce sticking of solder balls and related chip loss and downtime. Pocket holes are created using 3M’s Optical Precision Process that allows for much smaller hole circumferences (<0.01mm) than current conventional mechanical punch methods can achieve. This process also reduces the amount of foreign material that may contaminate IC chips.

    With pocket open radius control of <0.1 mm/0.12 mm and pocket tolerance down to ± 0.02, 3M™ Polycarbonate Carrier Tape 3202R 2D Barcode Series helps reduce die tilting, migration, cracking and misplacements associated with transporting ultra thin dies.

    Barcoding on the tape, not the die

    3M applies unique identifying barcodes directly to each pocket of this precision formed tape. In-house barcode capabilities are based on engraving technology, and enable efficient scanning and code reading that can be more effective than standard laser barcodes. 2D barcodes provide 99%+ grade A or B performance under the ISO/IEC 29158 standard. High-quality product information can be read at the speed of each customer’s semiconductor transport process.

    Streamlined traceability and tracking

    Because 3M applies each unique 2D identification barcode to the tape pocket instead of the semiconductor chip die, manufacturers can now skip the production step required for barcode lasering during transport.
