ST. PAUL, Minn. — 3M is pleased to announce that we have completed the acquisition of Scott Safety from Johnson Controls. By 3M and Scott Safety coming together as one, Scott Safety’s offerings will enhance 3M’s offerings and help protect even more people around the world.
3M’s Personal Safety Division provides respiratory, hearing, and fall protection solutions that help improve the safety and health of workers. Our business also supplies products and solutions in other safety categories such as head, eye, and face protection, reflective materials for high-visibility apparel, and protective clothing such as coveralls.
We know that our customers consider Scott Safety a trusted and well-regarded provider of innovative products, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) systems, gas and flame detection instruments, and other safety technologies that complement 3M’s personal protection offerings. Scott Safety’s products help protect firefighters, police, military, homeland security forces, rescue teams, and industrial workers teams worldwide from environmental hazards of all kinds.

This acquisition will enhance 3M’s product offerings and capabilities in respiratory protection as well as gas and flame detection instruments, and it also adds thermal imaging and new technologies to help provide our customers with a more comprehensive worker-protection selection to choose from that can help keep them safe in all types of hazardous situations.
Enhanced Respiratory Protection Offerings
Both 3M and Scott Safety are recognized as trusted brands with lines of respiratory protection. 3M will now offer self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) systems, which help protect firefighters, rescue teams and people in hazardous industrial environments around the world. Scott Safety’s SCBA offerings include:
- Scott Safety compressors
- Charge stations
- Mobile air systems
- Cylinders
- Storage
- Accessories
The addition of Scott Safety’s products will help supplement and enhance the current 3M respiratory offerings to be more comprehensive and offer even more respiratory protection choices to more types of workers.
Gas and Flame Detection Instruments
The acquisition also adds Scott Safety’s gas and flame detection lines of products, with items such as the following devices:
- Portable and fixed monitors
- Gas measurement devices
- Alarms and controllers
- Flame detectors
- Controllers for commercial and industrial applications

Thermal Imaging Protection and Other Scott Safety Technologies

For instance, more visible turnout gear is made possible by 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material. 3M™ DBI-SALA® Fall Protection helps protect safety at-height jobs and helps facilitate safer rescues from confined spaces and other situations.
Now, with the addition of Scott Safety’s knowledge, technology and experience in fire safety, 3M will also be able to offer the latest thermal imaging technology for a multitude of applications, including for firefighting purposes or search and rescue.
