3M has made a long-standing commitment to efficient paper and packaging use. We have reduced designed packaging weight for seven straight years, for a cumulative reduction of ~9,000 metric tons with more than half of this reduction (~5,000 mT) in paper-based packaging. One recent success is the 3M™ Coban™ 2 Layer Compression System, where we learned that small changes can add up quickly.
Each kit of 3M Coban 2 Layer Compression System contains two rolls in a cardboard box. We were able to remove the cardboard core in the Comfort Layer roll of the product, preventing several grams of waste in each kit. This change averted over 42,500 pounds of waste in 2014 alone! Reducing the thickness of the cardboard box kept another 32,500 pounds of materials out of the waste stream. This is truly a win-win situation: we use less resources in our process and you generate less waste. Less packaging means waste reduction, and a cleaner world for our patients and for all of us.
