Strengthening communities

3M helps create paths to economic well-being around the world. Through new and existing programs, we invest to build a foundation of accessible opportunities far into the future. We collaborate with our community partners to track outcomes, minimize barriers, and expand our engagement.

Supporting STEM experiences

    3M Young Scientist Challenge

The premier U.S. science competition for students in grades 5–8, this one-of-a-kind competition seeks to spark curiosity in students and empower them to solve real-world problems to help improve lives. The winner receives a $25,000 scholarship and the annual title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

    Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

3M’s longtime partnership with PLTW, a national nonprofit that integrates STEM and career and technical education for Pre-K–12 students, helps expand access to PLTW’s project-based hands-on curriculum and provides development opportunities for educators — all to empower the next generation of skilled professionals.

    Inspiring through science and discovery

3M’s long-standing science encouragement programs spark curiosity, build confidence, and connect learning to real-world possibilities. Together, these programs reflect our commitment to make science accessible, engaging, and welcoming for learners everywhere.

    • 3M Visiting Wizards – 3M volunteers bring the magic and excitement of science directly to classrooms and communities through hands-on experiments and demonstrations.
    • 3M Tech Talks – Connects students with 3M scientists and engineers to increase awareness of STEM and skilled trades careers through real-world insights and stories.
    • 3M TWIST (Teachers Working in Science and Technology) – Provides teachers with professional development and exposure to emerging technologies that strengthen their understanding of how science is applied to life.
    • 3M STEP (Science Training Encouragement Program) – Offers immersive hands-on learning experiences that help students apply scientific principles, creatively solve problems, and explore pathways to high-demand, high-growth careers. Students work in a 3M lab over the summer with a 3M mentor and supervisor.

    STEM programs around the world

Our global teams actively foster pathways to STEM careers through programs including:

    • FIRST® Robotics – This program helps young people discover and engage with STEM opportunities. Our global partnership with FIRST sponsors teams around the world, with 3M volunteers serving as mentors and coaches. 3M also makes significant product donations to support high-performing robots.
    • Fundación Robótica Para la Educación in Mexico – Through our support, Fundación RobotiX provides schools with learning materials, teacher training, and pedagogical support. 3M also organizes regional and national events designed to inspire students, encourage creativity, and nurture a culture that values innovation and problem-solving.
    • WorldSkills France – Dedicated to youth and instilling pride in the skilled trades, this initiative organizes competitions to showcase the expertise of young people and the future of work. In 2025, 3M provided support for the national finals competition, helping more than 800 competitors compete in 70 skills.

Building up the skilled trades

Back to:
  • Community training resources

To promote the development of a skilled workforce, we invest in programs like the 3M Manufacturing and Academic Partnership (MAP). 3M MAP connects students to careers in manufacturing through grant support for a robust mechatronics curriculum while providing hands-on education, scholarship access, and opportunities to learn future-forward manufacturing skills. We continue to bring the program to U.S. communities with 3M operations while aiming to expand globally, having started with an initial program in Poland.

    Skilled trades career pathways

3M helps St. Paul public school students receive college or certification credits for skilled trades classes through a collaboration with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system and Saint Paul Public Schools. With the growing need for skilled trades in manufacturing, this helps build out 3M’s hiring pipeline and gives more students a path to a well-paying job and a bright future.
