Common Hazards

Flying particles and debris

Flying particles can have enough mass and velocity to impact unprotected eyes, and could result in a cut or even pierced retina.
Dust particles and foreign bodies

Dust particles can became suspended in the air and may cause eye injuries. De-icing agents as well as metal fumes and smoke from arc welding are also potential eye hazards common in many workplaces.
Contact with chemicals

Hazardous chemicals are an eye hazard in many workplaces, even when not working directly with them. Incidental contact due to splash events pose a risk of exposure to water, paint and other chemicals.
Optical radiation

Some of the main sources of risk from optical radiation (ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR)) include: welding, brazing, cutting, furnaces, heat treatment, high-intensity artificial and natural light sources, and ultraviolet (UV) lamps.
