The hot-pressed boron carbide and silicon carbide ceramic strike-face of our 3M™ Lightweight Body Armor shatters or deforms a bullet on impact. The effectiveness of our ceramic is enhanced by a proprietary backing layer that absorbs residual energy, provides structural support, and reduces back face deformation (BFD). Together, these optimized composite structures produce armor capable of withstanding multiple hits. These armor systems give the men and women who protect us the required projectile penetration resistance and in some designs are 70% lighter than conventional armor steel—reducing fatigue and boosting confidence.
