3M Greenville Plant

Greetings from 3M Greenville

  • 3M is a global innovation company that never stops inventing. Over the years, we have worked to improve daily life for hundreds of millions of people all over the world. We have made driving at night easier, made buildings safer, and made consumer electronics lighter, less energy-intensive and less harmful to the environment. We even helped put a man on the moon.

Every day at 3M, one idea always leads to the next, igniting momentum to make progress possible around the world.

    3M Greenville, South Carolina

3M Greenville, South Carolina, located on 100 acres of 3M property, consists of two distinct manufacturing plants within the Electronics and Energy Business Group and the Industrial Business Group:

    • Film Manufacturing and Supply Chain Operations (Film Plant)
    • Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division (Tape Plant)

The Film Plant produces a wide variety of polyester films, which are used in many 3M products by several divisions of 3M Company.

The Tape Plant produces box sealing tapes and polypropylene films. These films are used as backing for box sealing tapes, whitening strips, and other consumer applications.

    History of 3M Greenville

The 3M Greenville Manufacturing Site is located at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center (SCTAC), previously known as Donaldson Center. Initially known as Donaldson Air Base, this area originated from a large military air base that provided air support for WWII and the Korean War. The base was closed in 1963, and the area was transitioned into what today is a large industrial park with about 100 employers and 8000 employees tied to SCTAC operations.

The film plant was built by Olin in 1971 and opened in 1972. The Greenville Film Plant was acquired from Olin Corporation in 1974. In 1975 construction was started on the Greenville Tape Plant, and it started operations in 1976.

A major expansion took place in the Film Plant in 1982-1983 (G2 line). Additional converting facilities were added to the Tape Plant in 1983 along with an expansion for an administrative building in 1984. In 1999, the Tape Plant was expanded to install the 17J film line. In 2007, construction began on an additional Film Line (G3), which resulted in the construction of a new building and additional manufacturing capacity. In 2012, the Tape Plant expanded to include the grid melter and paper core making operations. Significant upgrades were made to the HM2 coater in 2014 and to the HM1 coater in 2015 to eliminate solvents from the site.

In the Plant

  • 3M Greenville Film Plant Technologies:

    • Polyester Film Making and Coating
    • Reclaim Pelletizing
    • Brightness Enhancing Films
    • Release Liners

    3M Core Technology:
Light Management Lm: Begin with 3M's intimate understanding of advanced materials. Combine those materials in thin films with hundreds of layers. Integrate with 3M's unmatched ability to create microscopic structures on films (and other surfaces). By mixing these and other technologies, 3M manipulates light to transform everyday products. Signs are brighter and easier to read. Security markings seem to float above documents. Electronic displays are more vivid and more colorful-but draw less power.

Display Di: 3M display materials manipulate the transmission and reflection of light. By combining our expertise in multilayer films, lenses and microreplication, we are able to increase the clarity, durability or brightness of virtually all types of electronic displays-from liquid crystal displays in handheld devices, to LCD monitors and televisions, to gigantic projection displays. These materials are also used in privacy filters for laptop computers and for automated teller machines.

Adhesives Ad: So strong they can hold a structural panel for the life of a building... so gentle they yield to a child. Because 3M adhesives have been engineered to fit our customers' needs, they are used in such diverse products as airplanes and cell phones, automobiles and medical dressings. We excel in curable adhesives and epoxies. And, of course, pressure-sensitive tapes, which 3M invented more than 80 years ago.
