    3M DeKalb, Illinois

    History of 3M DeKalb

    1985

    The first 3M operations in DeKalb begin on Corporate Drive, south of I88 in an industrial park. The building was 3M’s first mechanized distribution center, 225,000 square feet on 65 acres. The building served Consumer and Industrial businesses.

    1993

    International DC Consolidated to DeKalb - Leased Taylor Building (150,000 square feet)

    1995

    Consumer Business Moved to Oswego, IL in a 200,000 square foot building

    1997

    DK1 expansion adds another 150,000 square feet to consolidate the Taylor building operations. 63 dock doors in operation.

    1998

    3M Leases the Aurora DC. 300,000 square feet and moved the Oswego operation to Aurora

    2005

    DK2, a former Caterpillar manufacturing facility was leased for operations. The 277,000 square foot facility is located 6 miles north of DK1. It has served Consumer business and functioned as overflow warehouse storage for the campus.

    2006

    DK3 (also known as DK2, building 3), a 203,000 square foot leased facility is opened due to consolidation of the Atlanta DC to DeKalb. The building shares a truck parking lot with DK2. It has served Consumer and Safety & Graphics businesses as well as the consolidation center for Export Operations.

    2007

    The 3M Aurora distribution center moves operations to a new 410,000 square foot facility in DeKalb located approximately ½ way between DK1 and DK2/3 in a new industrial park just north of I88. The building serves Electrical, Industrial, Safety and Graphics businesses.

    2011

    DKC, a 650,000 square foot facility, is built on 50 acres with 77 dock doors. 377 days from approval to the first order shipment!  DKC and MDC are located in the same industrial park on adjacent properties. The building serves Consumer business.

    2016

    DK6, a 978,000 square foot facility, is scheduled to open. The building will consolidate operations that have historically taken place in DK2, DK3 and MDC. The building is located directly east of DKC on 50 Acres of land with 140 dock doors servicing Electrical, Industrial, Safety and Graphics businesses.

    Visitor & Vendor Guidelines

    Upon arrival, all visitors will be required to sign the visitor and vendor guidelines. Please review the guidelines below prior to your visit to familiarize yourself with these guidelines, and contact your 3M DeKalb visit host if you have any questions.

    Security & Safety Information

    All visitors and vendors are required to sign in and out on the visitor register at the receptionist desk. When you sign-in, you will be issued a 3M ID Badge which you must wear at all times while in our facility.

  • General

    We ask that while in our facility you follow the requirements below as they are designed or intended to ensure your safety. In addition, please do not cause potentially unsafe conditions, whether to you or others, nor perform any action that would reasonably be expected to be unsafe.

    • All non-3M employees must have an escort in the warehouse unless issued a “Non-Escort” ID.
    • Cameras and cell phones are not permitted in any production work area.
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is to be worn in all designated areas.
    • Steel-toe shoes are required in the warehouse unless escorted.
    • Eye protection must be worn in all areas of the warehouse.
    • We are a tobacco-free campus. Smoking and other use of tobacco is prohibited.
    • Do not climb on any part of the racks.
    • Horseplay, including running, is not allowed.
    • Only UL-rated intrinsically safe equipment is allowed in the hazardous materials rooms.
    • Do not attempt to lift or move material that is awkward and/or heavy. Utilize material handling equipment and/or ask for help.
    • All accidents or injuries must be reported immediately to your escort or any member of the management team.

    Powered Industrial Vehicles

    • Only licensed warehouse personnel or a designated contractor are allowed to operate Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIVs) including personal transporters.
    • Never travel under, nor stand on or under, the forks of any lift truck or the order picker.
    • Pedestrians approaching PIV operators must obtain recognition of their presence through either verbal or eye contact to ensure that the operator is aware of their presence.

    Equipment Operation

    • Traffic moving north/south has the “Right of Way”. Keep to the center of the aisles for improved PIV visibility.
    • No contractor shall borrow or use 3M equipment unless an “Equipment Use Agreement” is signed.
    • Do not block fire doors, fire equipment, or exit doors with staged/stored material or equipment.
    • Do not enter trailer unless dock lock is engaged and green light is on or wheels are properly chocked.

    Lockout/Tagout

    • Do not remove a tag from or attempt to operate any equipment that has been locked or tagged out.
    • “TRAINED AND EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL ONLY” are permitted to lockout/tagout energized equipment.

  • 3M DeKalb Life

    3M DeKalb is located within eyeshot of I88 and fewer than 100 miles from 5 other major interstate highways. With the first facility on the campus opening in 1985, the operations have grown to be 3M’s largest distribution facility in the world. We receive thousands of 3M products from all regions of the world and ship to locations across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and some locations in Asia.

    DeKalb is a vibrant community, located approximately 60 miles west of Chicago. The area offers small town hospitality with big city amenities.

    DeKalb is also the home of Northern Illinois University (NIU). Chartered in 1895, Northern Illinois University first opened its doors as the Northern Illinois State Normal School in 1899 as a teachers' school. The university has since grown into a world-class, research-focused public institution that attracts students from across Illinois, the country and the world. NIU supports STEM initiatives through an outreach program aimed at increasing literacy and interest for K-12 students, families and educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

  • 3M DeKalb Community Involvement

    Community Support Group – A group of 3M volunteers who raise funds in a variety of means in order to donate the proceeds to local charitable organizations.

    School Event – 3M DeKalb invites area schools to receive 3M products for use in their schools. Products are donated by 3M and the event is hosted by 3M Volunteers.

    3Mgives – Local schools and non-profit agencies receive in excess of $35,000 in grants from 3Mgives, our local Community Support Group and the United Way donations of our team members on an annual basis.
