Welcome to 3M Cordova

Proud to be part of the Cordova community for more than 50 years.

3M Cordova is a high-tech facility consisting of Electronic Materials and Internal Materials manufacturing. We blend, react and purify hundreds of products using a wide variety of technologies throughout the plant. Ultimately, these products are used by other 3M manufacturing facilities or go into industrial, commercial and consumer applications around the world for a broad range of customers.

Our facility creates career opportunities for more than 500 employees making a wide variety of technologies that enable products such as Post-It™ Notes, Scotch Magic™ Tape, Scotch Blue™ Painter’s Tape and several medical tapes to “stick.”

  • Used in electronic displays for products like cell phones, including LCD and OLED displays, to make vibrant colors and crisp, contrasting images. These adhesives helped prevent touch panel deterioration and allowed the first curved screens to be bonded.

    Solvent-less Adhesives

Enable laptop computer construction, bond trains and rail cars, and assemble sports equipment such as golf clubs, baseball bats and snowboards.

  • Can help restore teeth and blend shades for oral care patients, like in 3M™ Filtek™ Universal Restoratives.

  • Used in Scotch® Double Sided Tape and industrial adhesives to bond plastic and rubber.

  • Enable products we rely on at work and at home every day, like Post-It™ Notes, Scotch® Brand Tape and Scotch Blue™ Painter’s Tape.

Cordova’s Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

  • Icon of a house with a leaf inside of it.

3M is committed to the environment we share in Cordova. We take seriously our responsibility as a technology manufacturer that uses chemistry to handle our operations for our customers, employees, and community.

In 2021, 3M announced it expects to invest approximately $1 billion over the next 20 years to accelerate new environmental goals: achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, reduce water use by 25 percent at its facilities, and return higher quality water to the environment after use in manufacturing operations. We are investing more than $170 million at our Cordova facility to engineer and install an advanced wastewater management system that leverage state-of-the-science technologies and supplement existing systems onsite. Construction on this site is underway and the technology is scheduled to be online summer of 2022.

One aspect of our operations we are currently managing is fluoromaterials. These materials have been the subject of public discussion, and we believe it is important to share the facts about how 3M is monitoring their presence at our facility. 3M currently maintains a network of onsite monitoring wells that capture ground water that may contain materials from our facility. These wells divert this ground water to an onsite treatment facility. They are stationed around the perimeter of 3M Cordova to help prevent these substances from migrating in ground water and have been doing so for more than a decade. 3M operates monitoring technologies to measure levels of these materials in ground water, and has shared data with regulators for years.

We provide regular updates on sampling from these wells to government agencies like the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to demonstrate how we are managing these materials. We also are working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies to determine if potential technological enhancements at 3M Cordova can help to further control these substances.

3M also understands our neighbors may have questions about health sciences and fluoromaterials. For more information, please click here.
