3M Alexandria Plant

Greetings from 3M Alexandria

  • 3M is a global innovation company that never stops inventing. Over the years, we have worked to improve daily life for hundreds of millions of people all over the world.  We have made driving at night easier, made buildings safer, and made consumer electronics lighter, less energy-intensive and less harmful to the environment. We even helped put a man on the moon.

Every day at 3M, one idea always leads to the next, igniting momentum to make progress possible around the world.

    History of 3M Alexandria

3M opened its' Alexandria Abrasives Plant in January, 1967, in a temporary plant of 3,000 square feet.  In March of 1968, we moved to the location we occupy today.

The original building contained 60,000 square feet and has been expanded six times.  Alexandria was selected because of the excellent plant site, adequate power, transportation, water, and reliable, industrious people.

We celebrated our 45th anniversary in 2012 and continue to grow as one of the area's largest industries and employers.

In the Community

  • 3M Alexandria Life

Alexandria has become a regional center for manufacturing, retail and services businesses, education and the arts, medicine, and wellness.  The city is strategically located along the I-94 transportation corridor.  Close proximity to Fargo-Moorhead and the Twin Cities, and a well-educated labor force, make Alexandria a vibrant community for business and residential growth.

Our area lakes, natural resources, and shopping centers bring an unbelievable amount of people and financial possibilities into our communities.  It is not uncommon for our population to triple during the summer season.  The huge influx of visitors requires our communities to maintain a strong infrastructure.  Not only does this benefit our guests, but our local residents have become accustomed to a quality of life and availability of resources that are often only found in larger metropolitan areas.

Recent community collaboration projects include the formation of the Alexandria Area YMCA, expansion of swimming availability at City Park, and a large number of high quality entertainment events.

Access to outstanding medical care is available through two area clinics and the Douglas County Hospital.

District 206 for K-12 education and the Alexandria Technical & Community College both proudly serve the Alexandria area with academic excellence.  The commitment toward education from the community, parents, and staff has resulted in some impressive student achievements.  Community Education provides lifelong learning opportunities for residents of all ages, interests and abilities.

  • 3M Alexandria Community Involvement

3M Alexandria understands the importance of giving back to our community.  We actively support K-12 Education, Health & Human Services programs, Arts & Culture and Environment through partnerships, contributions and volunteerism in Alexandria and other surrounding communities.

Our plant is proud to provide strong support for local schools including grants for math, science, and technology programs.  We have direct involvement with local educations through the TWIST (Teachers Working in Science and Technology) program and employee volunteers in the classroom.

We support our community through strong local involvement with civic leaders, community projects, and the local United Way.  We support the Arts through grants to the local AAAA Theater.

Our employees spend numerous hours each year volunteering their own time and efforts on a variety of projects such as Math Counts, Lego League, Earth Day, Science Fair, YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, and volunteering to support the local food shelf.
