3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape EX4311 features an acrylic adhesive formulated for bonding to advanced clear coat systems including carbamates. The non-liner side features a different adhesive for a range of paints and surfaces. The viscoelastic foam core provides stress relaxation when exposed to high application loads, and maintains tight bond-line aesthetics under normal conditions.
Part of the 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape Series EX4300 series, our 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape EX4311 is developed specifically for attaching exterior trim and other parts to low surface energy (LSE) automotive paint surfaces. It features a acrylic foam core with two different adhesives – one for each side of the application.
1. 3M Branded liner
Easy to identify, difficult to imitate: The red, 3M branded liner on 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes allows customers to quickly confirm that they are receiving the 3M quality they expect from their purchase.
2. Liner side adhesive
The liner-side adhesive is formulated for bonding to the most advanced LSE automotive clear coats, including those comprised of epoxy/acid powder, 2K urethane, acrylosilane and MVSS carbamate. This adhesive is also excellent for existing medium surface energy (MSE) paint systems.
3. Viscoelastic acrylic foam core
Exclusive to 3M, the acrylic foam core of 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes provides stress relaxation when high application loads are encountered, while maintaining tight bond-line aesthetics under normal conditions.
4. Non-liner side adhesive
The non-liner-side adhesive is formulated for high initial adhesion to a variety of automotive substrates and coatings.
This new tape utilizes TC2 adhesive – a proprietary 3M technology – on the liner side of the tape to ensure compatibility with a variety of paints, including paints comprised of MVSS carbamate, epoxy/acid powder, 2K urethane, acrylosilane, etc.
The difference is the liner side adhesive. 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape Series EX4300 utilizes TC2 adhesive. 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape Series EX4300 has the same non-liner side adhesive (NLS) and the same proprietary 3M acrylic based foam core as 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape Series EX4000.
Any application featuring bonding to LSE paint clear coats, in particular carbamate and acrylosilane paints. These applications include, but are not limited to attaching exterior trim components such as appliques, claddings, spoilers, body side moldings, chromed trim, wheel arches, wheel flares, etc. Contact a 3M application engineer for more details.
The recommended tabbing option for 3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4300 Series is the use of extended liner tabs. This is no different than other existing 3M Acrylic Plus Tapes. For applications where an extended liner tab may not be an option, there is a heat-tabbable liner option available: 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape EX4300T Series. 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5400 or 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5081 is recommended for use with 3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4300T Series tapes. For PSA tabbing we recommend 3M™ Tabbing and Splicing Tape 5699 for 3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4300 Series and 3M™ Tabbing and Splicing Tape 5300 for 3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4300T Series.
Yes, this product is die-cuttable. However, the aggressive nature of the skin adhesive is such that we recommend weeding the product immediately following the die-cut procedure to avoid having the product "weld" back together after the cut. Die-cut performance is better at lower temperatures and artificial cooling of the tape will help improve performance at warmer external temperatures.
This product features a recently introduced ML-2 liner that offers excellent release characteristics. Contact your 3M sales representative for a product sample.
The room temperature performance of this product on LSE paint clear coats is very robust. The 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape Series EX4300 will demonstrate a foam split after a 20 minute dwell. This failure mode is consistent for all dwell conditions.
3M understands that development of automotive applications is typically driven by specification requirements and performance. Each OEM has their own unique criteria and 3M continues to develop suitable products to meet those demands. Please contact your 3M application engineer for support and to obtain specific test data.
