3M™ Structural Adhesive SA9816AOV is a two-part epoxy automotive structural adhesive formulated for galvanized steel or aluminum hem flange bonding applications involving very high draw lubricant coating weights with good induction reactivity, an important factor in achieving fast lock-up.
When properly cured during the e-coat bake, 3M structural adhesive SA9816AOV achieves structural bond strength to lubricated steel and aluminum. It is also compatible with dry film lubricants used on aluminum surfaces. It has very long dwell time capability before e-coat bake. Its low activation temperatures help minimize panel distortion, and provide excellent off-ratio and over-bake tolerances. This adhesive can also be spot cured.
Since manufacturers can pre-set automotive panel assemblies, 3M structural adhesive SA9816AOV can eliminate the need for body-in-white ovens and additional fixturing outside of the hemming cell. This can reduce the potential for panel distortion on aluminum hems.
As automotive OEMs are using more and more lightweight materials such as aluminum and thin steel panels, the hemming process for hoods, trunks and doors becomes more complex. The need for mixed material joints is growing, as well as improved vehicle stiffness and better driving characteristics without sacrificing reliable manufacturing processes.
3M structural adhesive SA9816AOV eliminates the expense of pre-cure ovens associated with 1K solutions on aluminum parts and helps significantly reduce quality defects during production. It can be pre-cured with induction to prevent parts from moving during transport or during the e-coat bath before final bake. This helps minimize aluminum panel distortion after the e-coat oven, increases design flexibility and reduces cycle time.
Formulated for longer dwell times and lower cure temperatures, 3M structural adhesive SA9816AOV is ideal for bonding newer materials such as carbon fiber in automotive OEM structures and sub-structures. It can be induction cured at temperatures as low as 115 °C / 239 °F, which allows for carbon fiber and other components to be effectively bonded to metals such as aluminum without distortion or resin degradation. The adhesive features controlled reactivity for a longer work time (approx. 1 hour) and proper panel lock-up after induction heating for accelerated curing.
Use 3M structural adhesive SA9816AOV in hem flanges for a wide variety of automotive applications.
