Many times, it’s the kind of accident or instance that never crossed your mind—until it’s too late. That’s why one of the greatest occupational health and safety challenges that safety managers and workers face is the fact that every worksite presents its own set of specific safety challenges. When knowing is half the battle, it’s critical to not only reactively mitigate hazards and risks as they arise, but also to proactively anticipate and recognize them before they escalate into larger problems.
Health and safety managers and business owners who take a proactive approach to their safety programs often rely on 3M’s Technical Service team to give them a critical outside perspective. That’s because we care just as much about helping you understand the hazards as we do about helping you understand our solutions.
While you may want us to perform an on-site walkthrough to help you evaluate your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and applications or help with a certain issue, we provide a host of other educational resources to help you identify hazards in other ways. From classes that cover common specific hazards—such as respiratory issues, noise hazards, welding or falls—to roadshows where you can see product demonstrations, OHS conferences and more, we can provide these resources to help empower you to mitigate risks to your workers.
One example of how this proactive approach can help is our recent work with health and safety managers in a shipyard. When they brought our team in for an on-site walkthrough, we helped them identify a small but growing trend of eye injuries that were beginning to have an impact on their workforce and the company as a whole.
Before it became a much larger problem, we helped them identify a variety of potential causes for their eye injuries—some of which they had not even considered. Once we established this knowledge as a foundation, we helped them identify the PPE that might help effectively mitigate the majority of the risks. In this case, it was a matter of specifying full-face respirators and PAPRs with rigid headtops, where they previously had been using other solutions. With the respiratory protection equipment in place, they saw a significant reduction in eye injuries across the entire business.
