History of 3M Northridge

3M Northridge began as a global pharmaceutical company called Riker Laboratories, which was a subsidiary of Rexall Drug Company. 3M purchased Riker as a subsidiary in 1970 and operated this way until 1991 when it was integrated into 3M as the Pharmaceutical Division. In 1999, the Drug Delivery Systems Division was formed as a separate division, and, in 2006, the Pharmaceutical Division was divested to other companies.

The Drug Delivery Systems Division continues to make many of those original products as a contract manufacturer in addition to a multitude of inhalation and transdermal products for other customers. We have six other locations around the world, and we operate globally with major pharmaceutical companies as customers.

Today, our site maintains a modern Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Quality Control laboratory that ensures products meet customer expectations and full regulatory compliance. The site is audited regularly by FDA, DEA, and EU regulatory authorities. We are also audited by customers who receive products or are interested in doing manufacturing at 3M Northridge.

3M Northridge is a manufacturing facility for the 3M Drug Delivery Systems Division, which has a long history of innovation and is committed to continuous improvement in both performance and value. This facility manufactures Inhalation Drug Delivery (IDD) and Transdermal Drug Delivery (TDD) products for other pharmaceutical companies.

Inhalation Drug Delivery (IDD) Products

With a successful 60-year history that includes development of the first metered-dose inhaler (MDI) and first CFC-free propellant pressurized Metered-Dose Inhaler, 3M Drug Delivery Systems is a leader in inhalation technology. These products provide a variety of treatments for asthma and bronchitis.

Transdermal Drug Delivery (TDD) Products

Building on a history of innovation, 3M combines thirty years of formulation, development, film, and adhesive expertise with industry best practices to create high quality transdermal drug delivery systems and components. In Northridge, we produce products containing nitroglycerin for the treatment of angina and Estradiol for hormone replacement therapy. 3M adhesives are a core technology and known for world-class performance across many applications, and we are a global leader in transdermal patch and component manufacturing for the pharmaceuticals industry.

Northridge, Calif., is a residential suburb located 40 minutes northwest of the City Center of Los Angeles, Calif. Los Angeles is a world center of business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology, and education and is the second largest city in the United States. It is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields and is one of the most substantial economic engines in the U.S.

This area of Southern California is known for many things including the 2010 Championship Los Angeles Lakers, Disneyland, Getty Museum, L.A. Live, Hollywood, Malibu, Universal Studios, and many other attractions including 80 theaters and 300 museums.
