Greetings from 3M Guin
3M is a global innovation company that never stops inventing. Over the years, we have worked to improve daily life for hundreds of millions of people all over the world. We have made driving at night easier, made buildings safer, and made consumer electronics lighter, less energy-intensive and less harmful to the environment. We even helped put a man on the moon.
Every day at 3M, one idea always leads to the next, igniting momentum to make progress possible around the world.
History of 3M Guin
Had it not been for the perseverance of community leaders five decades ago, the 3M Guin plant very likely would have been built in neighboring Georgia. Hearing through the “industrial grapevine” that a Minnesota company was seeking a southern manufacturing location, an Alabama delegation led by Guin Mayor Rex Wright quickly organized the first of what would be three trips north to St. Paul and the 3M headquarters.
Even though they were told they were too late and a site had already been chosen in Georgia, the group persisted. They even got the Alabama governor involved, James E. “Big Jim” Folsom. On their third trip to Minnesota, they were told the plant would be built in Guin.
In October 1954, 3M broke ground on a 60 acre site in Guin, Alabama that used to be a cotton field. We started production in 1955. Since then, the facility has been expanded many times and employment has continued to grow. 3M continues to make investments to keep 3M Guin competitive globally. The 3M Guin Plant is an economic mainstay of Guin and Marion County.
Wherever your days take you, you’re in touch with a 3M product more often than you know. That’s because we are always collaborating and creating to create products that improve life for people everywhere.
At the Guin site, we are especially expert in these core technologies:
People from all parts of our county enjoy the four seasons of the region. Best of all, people enjoy the friendly, down to earth community that exemplifies Guin.
Guin offers sports activities including hunting, fishing, and boating at nearby Smith Lake, as well as college sports next door in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. All this, plus varied community and religious opportunities, give the citizens of Guin an idyllic place to put down roots and raise a family.
3M Guin has close community ties as a result of strong support of local schools and events and participation in local and state government.
3M Guin is a strong partner with education. Our plant donates supplies to surrounding local schools and non-profit organizations. Our employees visit local schools and speak to the students. In fact, plant tours are offered to the students. 3M Guin also supports Bevill State Community College through scholarships, and we sponsor two local career fairs annually.
Our employees collaborate together and spend numerous hours of their time volunteering to support organizations such as United Way, Habitat for Humanity, volunteer fire departments, community programs for underprivileged children, and faith based organizations and churches. Additionally, 3M Guin participates in local industrial development and supports local drug abuse and domestic violence programs.
