3M™ Wetordry™ Cloth Sheet 281W is an aluminum oxide Wetordry™ abrasive product constructed on a screen cloth backing. This cloth sheet is primarily used for blending or deburring and can be used to prep metal prior to painting. The cloth sheet can be run wet or dry, to suit user preferences and expand the number of uses.

The Wetordry™ Advantage
3M™ Wetordry™ products are backed with waterproof backing that supports both wet and dry applications. Lighter weight than cloth and smooth rather than textured, backing is preferable for lighter applications such as finishing and paint prep. At the same time, many such applications produce a significant amount of dust, clogging the abrasive points and creating an inferior work environment. These effects can be minimized by sanding with water to rinse dust away from the workpiece and the abrasive surface.

Used with water, 3M™ Wetordry™ Cloth Sheet 281W helps users rinse areas of the workpiece during finishing (PDF, 123.6 Kb). It prevents dust and debris from clogging the abrasive, while allowing for a consistent, fast cut. 3M™ Wetordry™ Cloth Sheet 281W is ideal on e-coat primer and wood and may also be used dry for finishing metal and gel coats. In the marine industry, it can be used for sanding old finishes, fine feather edging and surface work. Additionally, this product comes in a number of grades — P500, P600, P800 and P1000 — so users can find the abrasive that best fits the needs of the job.

The Benefits of Aluminum Oxide
The secret to a sharp, consistent and long-lasting abrasive is the mineral. One of the most important features of the 3M™ Wetordry™ Cloth Sheet 281W is its aluminum oxide mineral, which is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its fast cut-rate and long life. This mineral makes a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, whereas traditional natural minerals dull more quickly. Due to its fast cut-rate, hardness and strength, it is widely used in sanding and finishing applications. Aluminum oxide is suitable for a wide variety of materials in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys.

The Benefits of a Cloth-Backing
3M™ Wetordry™ products include 3M proprietary waterproof cloth backing, which supports both wet and dry applications. Cloth-backed sheets are known for their durability and flexibility; and they're a good first choice when working with metal. The cloth backing provides durability for either hand or machine sanding, adding to this product's versatility across a number of applications.
