At 3M, we understand the positive impact that building a clean energy future will have on our world. We have a long history of working with the Department of Energy to improve our clean energy solutions, and help our customers reduce their energy usage, and our materials science expertise has positioned us to help tackle the challenges in decarbonization and renewable fuels head on.
With the Government’s clean energy plan and goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, now is the time to develop clean energy technologies for the future. 3M is one of many science and technology partners to help realize these goals.
We are aligned with the Department of Energy in the critical importance of making this future a reality now.
As energy needs continue to increase, our strategy for how we help meet this demand is critical. We understand all facets of the energy equation. We apply science to help our customers so that they can generate, deliver and use energy that can result in significant savings – and understanding the full scope is key to achieving our energy goals for the future.
Helping make energy sources more productive or efficient is only half the equation. Reducing energy use is the other.
All energy sources may not come from the same place, we help utilities focus on transmission of energy to get it where it’s needed for the long haul, both in distance and decades.
3M is an emerging leader in technologies we believe focus on decarbonization and renewable fuels.
3M works to measure and reduce our own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. We also serve our customers products that help them improve their energy efficiency and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
Measurably reduce and capture greenhouse gas emissions.
Electric vehicles – Increase performance and extend range for electric vehicles.
Aerospace – Reduce fuel consumption and drag on aircraft.
Improve heating, cooling and light management in commercial and residential buildings.
Improve efficiency of renewable energy platforms and develop alternative energy options.
Strengthen resiliency and optimize grid management.
3M is one of the leaders in chemistry and materials science and those are two critical components in understanding the clean energy future. With manufacturing facilities in 43 states, our company has the U.S.-based infrastructure and connections to help support our country.
We have the potential to support scale up opportunities for smaller start-up companies as well as collaborations with startups and existing companies.
As a premier research and development organization, 3M has a history of working with government agencies and other companies to drive next generation technologies forward. Our vast network of scientists and researchers not only create innovative ideas, but we have the ability to of drive those ideas into commercialization.
Sustainability is a core value of our company. Our goals reflect our commitment to going beyond compliance and thinking holistically about how our operations and products affect the world and every life in it.
Our Sustainability Strategic Framework encompasses three areas:
Designing solutions that do more with less material and replenishing natural resources rather than depleting them.
Innovating to decarbonize industry and reduce our own environmental footprint.
Investing in our communities to ensure that the future workforce is inspired to use science to create a brighter future for all.
Reduce Scope 1 and 2 market-based GHG emissions from our 2019 baseline by at least 50% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and achieve carbon neutrality in our operations by 2050.
Increase renewable energy to 50% of total electricity use by 2025 and to 100% by 2050.
Reduce dependence on virgin fossil-based plastic by 125 million pounds by the end of 2025.
Reduce global water usage by 20% by 2025, and 25% by 2030, indexed to sales.
In addition, we practice sustainability in our operations:
2019 –CEO Mike Roman pledged to transition the company to 100% renewable electricity across our global operations. At the same time, he increased our interim target for electricity sourced from renewables from 25% to 50% by 2025 which we achieved in 2022.
2019 –3M global headquarters powered by 100% renewable energy.
We have onsite renewable electricity in 3 continents.
