Low-light driving conditions can be dangerous. But 3M Science can help reduce that danger. And a recent study, conducted over nearly 40 years, shows why.

The study, produced by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), used crash-site data and statistical modeling to estimate the benefit of various roadway safety technologies. Their data is clear: Reflective tape plays a significant impact in reducing crashes and saving lives. Especially on dark non-lit roads where the study found the use of reflective tape reduced side and rear impacts by 41 percent.

The study also estimates that since June 1st, 2001—when all heavy trailers needed reflective tape—reflective tape has prevented approximately 7,800 police-reported crashes per year. All told, the NHTSA estimates that retroreflective tape would save 191 to 351 lives per year.
