3M has always been a purpose-driven company. We unlock the power of people, ideas, and science to reimagine what’s possible. The power comes from connecting purpose to our performance.
Purpose drives our performance, delivering financial value to our shareholders while creating societal value for stakeholders through our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments. Our purpose provides 3M employees a powerful framework within which to make decisions and ensure that we meet the expectations of our stakeholders.
More than ever, we need science to create a more positive future where everyone can thrive. The resilience of our planet, our people, and our economy depends on it.
As the expectations of our customers, employees, investors, and stakeholders continue to increase, we are here to meet them — and to grow our business. For that, we set meaningful and measurable goals that demonstrate our ESG commitments and progress.
We are committed to innovate to decarbonize industry, accelerate climate solutions, and improve our environmental footprint. Since 2002, we have reduced our absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 72% and are approaching our goal of 50% renewable electricity at all global sites by 2025. We’re also investing $1 billion over 20 years to accelerate air and water stewardship and to implement new goals to reduce the company’s use of plastics.
We back initiatives that foster sustainable communities, including projects that protect threatened ecosystems, support local economies, enhance livelihoods, and promote science-based environmental education. 3M is uniquely positioned to bring our full capabilities to advance meaningful impact in our workplaces and our communities. We believe in an equitable and inclusive world, so we think, work, and act to drive meaningful change that endures.
Our corporate governance practices serve the long-term interests of our stockholders, strengthen 3M’s Board of Directors and management, and further enhance the public trust 3M has earned from more than a century of operating with unwavering integrity and doing business the right way.
The concept of risk appetite and tolerance is an essential component of our strategic planning, and it is the responsibility of our senior business leaders to plan accordingly. We firmly believe that good corporate governance practices serve the long-term interests of our stockholders, strengthen 3M’s Board of Directors and management, and further enhance the public trust 3M has earned from more than a century of operating with unwavering integrity and doing business the right way.
3M’s stakeholder engagement strategy on priority topic areas continues to evolve. We continually look to our stakeholders to help us increase our understanding, broaden our awareness, seek technical input and expertise, and evaluate possible collaborations and strategic partnerships.
Our Strategic Sustainability Framework helps us apply science to improve lives. The three pillars of Science for Circular, Science for Climate, and Science for Community help guide our business decisions and strategy, as well as how we focus our efforts on local and global community impact. Our Sustainability Goals are all underpinned by these three areas of focus:
Design solutions that do more with less material, advancing a global circular economy.
Innovate to decarbonize industry, accelerate global climate solutions and improve our environmental footprint.
Create a more positive world through science and inspire people to join us.
