      Enormous progress has been made in traffic safety technology in recent years—advances that have contributed to improved roadway safety in many countries around the world.

      Yet nearly 1.3 million people die each year on the world’s roads, and between 20 million and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. Globally, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people under age 29, and the economic consequences are estimated at more than $500 billion dollars per year.

      Clearly, more must be done to achieve road safety goals.
