Road safety is a crucial aspect of transportation that affects everyone on the road, including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. That's why the United States Department of Transportation has launched The National Road Safety Strategy, a comprehensive program aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and injuries by 50% over the next 30 years. 3M has made the commitment as a First Mover in this important initiative, as a company we have been at the forefront of safety innovation for over a century.
In addition to our work on The National Road Safety Strategy, 3M has been involved in a number of other transportation projects aimed at promoting safety and equity. One of the most recent projects is the Hope Street Trail in Rhode Island, where we helped to build a new bike and pedestrian path in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and the City of Providence.
The new Hope Street Trail connects the East Side of Providence with the Blackstone River Bikeway. The path is designed to provide safe, accessible transportation options for residents and visitors, while also promoting healthy living and community engagement. The project was made possible through a combination of public and private funding, including a grant from 3M's Community Giving Program.
As part of our involvement in the project, we provided a range of safety solutions to help make the trail safer and more accessible for everyone. This included high-visibility pavement markings, reflective signs, and pedestrian crossing systems, all designed to improve safety and visibility for trail users.
Our involvement in the Hope Street Trail goes beyond just providing safety solutions. We also worked closely with the project partners to ensure that the trail was designed with equity in mind. We took into consideration the needs and preferences of diverse user groups, such as families with young children, older adults, and people with disabilities. Our company’s commitment to equity was reflected in every aspect of the project, from the design of the trail to the selection of the safety solutions used.
If you are interested in developing a transportation project that promotes safety and equity, federal funding may be available to help support your efforts. The U.S. Department of Transportation offers a variety of grant programs, including the Surface Transportation System Funding Alternatives (SS4A) program, which provides funding for innovative projects that help reduce reliance on gas taxes and increase revenue for transportation infrastructure investments.
Our participation in The National Road Safety Strategy and the Hope Street Trail project are excellent examples of how the private sector can contribute to public safety and equity initiatives. Through our unique capabilities in safety technology and commitment to promoting equitable transportation solutions, 3M is helping to build a safer, healthier, and more connected world for everyone. If you are interested in developing similar projects in your community, federal funding may be available to help support your efforts.
