Featuring premium grade aluminum oxide on sturdy cotton backing, the 3M™ Cloth Segment 341D is ideal for sanding the outside diameter of cylinders, to remove rough areas and set a grain finish on many different types of metal surfaces. Primarily used for setting the grain on contoured metal parts, it is commonly used to finish large pieces such as carbon steel pipes and stainless steel tanks.

Reliable Construction for Contour Sanding
3M™ Cloth Segment 341D is constructed of a number of layers of coated abrasive cloth. These layers are held together on one end by a sturdy plastic assembly or base that slides easily into the teardrop-shaped slots of a 3M™ RX Hub (sold separately). As the hub rotates over the substrate, the abrasive delivers a linear grain finish. Segments offer more conformability over a comparable belt, making them more suitable for a range of contours and radiused areas of a workpiece. Additionally, segments wear more slowly than belts due to the layered abrasive.

Cloth-backed abrasives are known for their durability and flexibility and are a good choice for stock removal. 3M manufactures cloth segments of two types: slashed and unslashed. Slashed segments are cut into vertical strips that offer more conformability to inner contours. Unslashed segments are used when less conformability when a more aggressive product is required.

3M™ Cloth Segment 341D
Multi-Use Construction
Aluminum oxide mineral is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its cut-rate, durability, and long life. It can be used on a wide variety of materials in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys, and is the most commonly used industrial abrasive. The closed coat construction of 3M™ Cloth Segment 341D material delivers a consistent finish, making it a good choice for setting a grain pattern. Designed as a hardworking abrasive, 3M™ Cloth Segment 341D is manufactured with heat-resistant resin, a strong binding agent that adheres the abrasive to the backing and maintains the stability of the bond even in conditions of high heat or pressure. This also allows for faster sanding and a higher cut rate.

Ease of Use
The 3M™ RX Hub is an aluminum wheel with evenly spaced slots around the perimeter, into which the segments are inserted. These segments will also fit the keyhole shaped slots of hubs by other manufacturers. To hold the segments in place during operation, appropriately sized stamped metal flanges must be used on both sides of the hub to hold the segments in place when mounted on a spindle.
