Brazed Construction, Sharp Cut
Great for composites manufacturing, 3M™ Diamond Cut-Off Wheels feature exposed diamond mineral to help operators with cutting and flash removal on a variety of materials: ceramics, carbon-carbon composites, fiberglass-graphite composites, cast iron, ferrite, friction lining, graphite, plastics and rubber. Using a proprietary alloy, we bond diamond mineral to the rim of a steel core by brazing; this results in a stronger, more durable bond than conventional electroplated diamond wheels. Brazing helps expose the diamond mineral, even after it's bonded to the wheel. It's part of what makes our cut-off wheels effective for cutting and flash removal — exposed mineral means sharper, more aggressive cutting action. Moreover, brazing helps minimize loading by allowing debris to flow more freely off the wheel, which helps the wheel stay cool, cut clean and last longer.

Shape Up: Four Wheel Types
We offer cut-off wheels in four shapes, each individually suited to different application requirements. These shapes include:
  • Continuous Rim (1A1R)
  • Slotted Rim (1A1S)
  • Side Spokes (1A1RS)
  • Slotted Rim with Side Spokes (1A1SS)

Durable and fast-cutting wheels for the toughest cutting applications
Each shape offers unique benefits. Gaps or "slots" in wheels contribute to more aggressive cutting action, because the slits create greater depth on the cutting edge. Moreover, slits on the rim allow swarf and debris to escape and help the wheel run cool, which is desirable when loading is a concern. Conversely, continuous rims offer less aggressive cutting action, which is desirable when finer finishes are a top priority. Continuous rims are designed for general use and are commonly used for applications like trimming blanks to length or refining a tool's cutting edge. Slotted Rims allow the wheel to run cooler and allow faster debris removal. Side Spokes produce deeper cuts and help minimize splintering. Slotted Rims with Side Spokes combine high cut rate with edge quality, so they're great for heavy-duty cutting projects.
