Single-sided splicing tapes have adhesive on one side for simple overlap and butt splices and are also used for tabbing at the core and the end of the roll.

Double-sided splicing tapes have adhesive on both sides so the tape itself is sandwiched between the overlapping layers it’s splicing together.
