  • Nick Salome DDS

    Nick Salome, DDS

    • Title: Hidden Treatment, Clear Motivation: The psychology of esthetic orthodontic treatment.

Course Description: “Behavioral Economics” is a branch of psychology that studies how people make predictably irrational decisions. It is not just that we seem to get decisions wrong, but that we always error the same way. Dr. Salome will show how findings from decision making studies apply to orthodontic patients, especially to those pursuing highly esthetic orthodontic treatment. Understanding these concepts will shed light on why these patients can seem to the orthodontic practice to just be “crazy”. Indeed they are just being “irrational”, or in other words they are just being “human”. If we can better understand their irrationality; it will lead to better case conversion, better treatment planning, better (and easier) clinical outcomes.

      Learning Objectives:

      • Understand the psychology of patients seeking esthetic orthodontic treatment.
      • Learn how we can use our understanding to gain better case acceptance with patients considering orthodontic aligners.
      • Learn how to avoid common pitfalls that hurt our case acceptance and treatment success with esthetically minded patients.

Title: SPLICE: Tame your fear of “hybrid” treatment.

Course Description: The ability to “Splice” genes into an organism’s genome may at first sound as scary as “Dr. Frankenstein”, but new gene-editing tools are already leading to amazing phenotypic possibilities. Similarly, with orthodontic treatment, our ability to “Splice” a few brackets into our aligner therapy can lead to possibilities beyond what you might imagine! Whether we are overcoming the inherent shortcomings of aligners (like round-tooth-rotations and single-tooth-extrusions) or trying to treat more complex malocclusions (like extractions and impactions), adding a few brackets during part of the treatment can make all of the difference. Dr. Salome will show how the orthodontist can uniquely combine the best of both worlds of Aligners and Braces. In a world where so many sources are offering aligner therapy to our patients, we need to continue to grow and adapt to the new orthodontic environment.

Bio: Dr. Nick Salome is a Board Certified orthodontist who brings a unique perspective to dental education. With over 15 years of experience in private practice and teaching at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, he is comfortable with the analysis of the latest dental research as well as recognizing its real-world clinical application. He has lectured worldwide on many orthodontic topics but focuses on esthetic options for orthodontic treatment. Drawing from a wide background, he combines philosophy, psychology, and dentistry to elucidate the importance of orthodontic treatment in general and how we can make it better for our patients.
