No. 24 NASCAR Team and Jeff Gordon Drive to Greater Sustainability with 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid

    September 01, 2015

    • 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid keeps Hendrick Motorsports ahead of the environmental curve without compromising safety and performance on the track.

In the racing world, the drive toward greater sustainability is being addressed in countless ways. Hendrick Motorsports, operator of the No. 24 NASCAR® Sprint Cup Series team, has embraced the NASCAR® Green initiatives to reduce waste, carbon emissions, power consumption and overall environmental impact.

      A more sustainable solution
Over the years, racers have employed various types of chemical “clean agents” for fire suppression in their cars. Traditional halon and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) clean agents have high global warming potentials and pose significant long-term sustainability issues. 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid was designed with sustainability in mind and addresses many of the shortcomings of legacy clean agents. Novec 1230 fluid is not only a highly effective fire suppressant, but also has a very short (about a week) atmospheric lifetime and a global warming potential of less than 1 – about the same as naturally-occurring carbon dioxide.

High speed performance – leaving other extinguishants in the dust
Novec 1230 fluid is designed to quickly extinguish a fire in its incipient stage – before it has a chance to spread. Although liquid at room temperature, it is discharged as a gas, leaving sensitive equipment and electronics operational and without residue.

Driver and crew safety – no room for error
Even when deployed in the enclosed area of the car’s cockpit, Novec 1230 fluid provides a large margin of safety for the driver – greater than any other clean agent. It also does not affect the surface of the racetrack, keeping it clean for other drivers. It’s no wonder why Hendrick Motorsports chooses Novec 1230 fluid for the No. 24 team’s fire suppression needs.

“Racing is an engineering-driven sport. We rely on data and precise engineering to not only keep Hendrick Motorsports on the leading edge, but to help keep racing safe for our drivers, crew members, fellow drivers and our fans,” says Brian Whitesell, Hendrick Motorsports #24 team manager. “By using a fire suppression system based on 3M’s Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid, I feel confident that we’re providing a wide margin of safety without compromising our performance on the track.”
