ON SCREEN TEXT: Colored Water ON SCREEN TEXT: Oil ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec 73DE Engineered Fluid MAN: We're testing Novec 73DE with a common cutting oil, and to demonstrate a non-soluble fluid, we're also testing colored water. Split screen footage shows each step of the process. MAN: Add the cutting oil to a small vial. Pour in your Novec fluid sample. Vigorously shake the sample for 5 to 10 seconds. ON SCREEN TEXT: Mix for 5-10 seconds ON SCREEN TEXT: Let the solution settle ON SCREEN TEXT: Look for one homogenous phase MAN: Then let it sit. If the oil stays in the solution and you see one homogenous phase, this Novec fluid should work for you. But if your contaminate separates after shaking, sometimes the fix can be as simple as heating or sonication. In a vial, bubbles form between the separated solution and contaminate. ON SCREEN TEXT: Heating ON SCREEN TEXT: Sonication MAN: We can work with you to find the right process tweaks or suggest an alternative Novec fluid to dissolve the contaminate. If you think this screening test would work for you, we encourage you to try a sample. We have a number of Novec cleaning choices, and we'll help find one that's right for you. ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec Brand ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec Engineered Fluids Cleaning Test A man wearing safety glasses interviews. MAN: You can screen the performance of a Novec cleaning solvent with a quick and simple test. First, weigh a pre-cleaned metal coupon. Apply your oil or grease, and then weigh again. He spreads oil on one metal rectangle, and grease on another. He weighs them. ON SCREEN TEXT: Sample A: Oil coupon = 8.98 g +oil = 9.25 g ON SCREEN TEXT: Sample B: Grease coupon = 9.02 g + oil = 9.27 g He puts each coupon in a foil-covered beaker filled with solution and swirls it around. MAN: Immerse the dirty coupon in a beaker of boiling Novec fluid to simulate a vapor degreaser. Depending on the soil, it may come off immediately. Or you may have to leave it in a little longer--up to ten minutes--to let the solvent do its work. ON SCREEN TEXT: Immersion in Novec cleaning solvent: 10 secs to 10 mins MAN: Then pull it out, hold it in the vapor for 15 seconds, and let it dry. Using tweezers, he places the coupon on a paper towel. ON SCREEN TEXT: Hold for 15 sec in vapor zone MAN: Visually inspect the coupon, and then weigh it again. He places the coupon on a scale. ON SCREEN TEXT: Sample A: Oil coupon = 8.98 g final = 8.98 g ON SCREEN TEXT: Sample B: Grease coupon = 9.02 g final = 9.02 g ON SCREEN TEXT: Net = 0 ON SCREEN TEXT: Net = 0 ON SCREEN TEXT: Your sample is clean MAN: If your final weight equals your initial weight, you've successfully removed the soil. Cleaning Trial_VDESC_en_US ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec™ The Science of Clean Brand Keyboard music plays over white screens with text, pictures, and videos. FEMALE NARRATOR: Selecting a new solvent cleaning solution is an important decision. ON SCREEN TEXT: What to expect from your cleaning trial. FEMALE NARRATOR: Will it be a simple drop and replacement for my current vapor degreasing solvent? Will is be safe for my employees? Photos show workers cleaning metal parts in a lab and working together. A video shows the metal parts being submerged in clear fluid. FEMALE NARRATOR: But most importantly, will it get the job done? At 3M, we take away the guess work. In our cleaning trials, we clean your parts with Novec brand engineered fluids by 3M. A man examines a part under a microscope. An image of the magnification appears. Other men work in the lab as the first man sets aside the cleaned parts. ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec™ The Science of Clean Brand In an interview, a man stands with his back to shelves of Novec products. ON SCREEN TEXT: Karl Manske 3M Technical Service Specialist KARL MANSKE: I'm Karl Manske. I'll be walking you through the process. Before we start any cleaning trial, we discuss substrates, soils, and how you measure cleanliness. Karl removes metal parts from a bag containing a puddle of red gelatin-like substance. He puts the parts in a pair of aluminum trays. He takes a photo of one of the stained parts. KARL MANSKE: This is a sample batch of pneumatic fixtures coated with a process oil. The first thing we do is to establish a baseline for the trial. There are many modes of analysis available: from visual inspection to IR spectrometry. Karl sets a tray in a machine. KARL MANSKE: We start by replicating your process as closely as possible using Novec fluids to determine is Novec can be a drop-in replacement for your current solvent. ON SCREEN TEXT: Cleaning trials using 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids KARL MANSKE: We'll vary the process conditions to optimize the cycle time and the cleanliness of these parts Karl lowers a small metal basket with the pneumatic fixtures into a machine filled with liquids. He presses a button, and the backet lowers into the churning solvent. He makes an adjustment on a dial and then times the immersion. A split screen shows differently timed immersions and techniques. ON SCREEN TEXT: 15 sec immersion ON SCREEN TEXT: 30 sec immersion + sonication KARL MANSKE: Once the parts come out of the degreaser, we check them for cleanliness, both visually and with the IR spectrometer. Karl eyes one of the parts, then uses the spectrometer. He checks a line graph on a computer detailing the Part as as recieved; Novec cleaned part 15 s, no sonics; and Novec cleaned part, 30 s, with sonics. KARL MANSKE: During a trial, we compare against your standards using your preferred methods. Karl photographs a clean fixture, then packages it with the others. KARL MANSKE: All this data becomes part of the final cleaning report. We send the report and your cleaned parts back for your team to review. We'll work with you, within your qualification timeline to conduct a trial. But we know your decision depends on more than just cleaning performance. ON SCREEN TEXT: Are you ready to try a cleaning trial? FEMALE NARRATOR: That's why our fluids are nonflammable, enviornmentally sustainable, and have a high margin of worker safety. Icons show a crossed out flame and the earth. A bar graph compares Novec to less safe alternatives. FEMALE NARRATOR: Are you ready to try a free cleaning trial? And optomize vapor degreasing at your company? Karl stands with crossed arms with two other 3M employees behind him.
