Fire suppression — Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid

3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a clean agent fire extinguishant which was developed as a halon replacement and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) alternative. It belongs to a family of chemicals called halocarbons, a group which includes HFCs and fluoroketones. Novec 1230 fluid is a fluoroketone, while chemical clean agents like FM-200™ and ECARO-25® are HFCs (HFC-227ea, HFC-125). Novec 1230 fluid has a global warming potential (GWP) of less than one while these HFCs have a GWP of more than 3000. Novec 1230 fluid has the highest margin of safety for human occupancy among clean agents, including inert gas.

Clean agent fire suppression designed for the future

  • When you specify a fire protection system, your choices can determine whether a person, valuable asset or even an entire business survives a fire. When that system uses Novec 1230 fluid, you may confidently offer your client a solution that:

    • Extinguishes a fire in seconds, before it even starts and long before water-based systems discharge.

    • Helps protect irreplaceable paper documents and electronics. Because Novec 1230 fluid is a waterless fire suppression solution, it leaves no residue and is electrically non-conductive.

    • Provides the highest margin of safety for human occupancy of any clean agent solution under the NFPA 2001 standard.

    • Not subject to the HFC phasedown in the U.S. under the AIM Act.

    • Not subject to the HFC phasedown under the F-Gas regulation in Europe or under the global Montreal Protocol.

    • Offers the 3M™ Blue Sky℠ Warranty, designed to provide you with additional peace of mind regarding ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) regulations.

    • Is stored as a liquid and discharged as a gas.

    • Is appropriate for Class A, B and C fire hazards.

Because there's no time for down time. A view pans across a server room. Closeups show the servers, as well as a firefighting system. ON SCREEN TEXT: Live fire testing MALE NARRATOR: We constructed a working simulation of a data center inside this fire test chamber to compare the ability of water and Novec 1230 Fluid to extinguish a fire inside a typical server cabinet. The chamber has a detection system, water sprinklers, and a discharge system designed for use with Novec 1230 Fluid. ON SCREEN TEXT: 3M Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid MALE NARRATOR: A test of the Novec Fire Protection Fluid-based system is run first. To begin the test, a technician ignites sheets of ABS plastic inside an empty server cabinet. A technician stands by as a firefighter starts the fire. Readings appear, showing numbers rising as the server room fills with smoke, then falling as the firefighting system suppresses the blaze. Systems using Novec 1230 fluid are designed to extinguish a fire at the incipient stage. ON SCREEN TEXT: Extinguished in less than 20 seconds MALE NARRATOR: As sensors in the ceiling detect smoke and heat from the fire, an alarm is sounded, and the countdown to discharge begins. Once the agent is released, it quickly fills the room and penetrates the burning enclosure, extinguishing the fire in less than 20 seconds. A clean agent fire suppression system is designed to detect a fire at an earlier stage, helping to further reduce possible damage. After the test, technicians check a server for damage. MALE NARRATOR: After the smoke and agent have been evacuated, technicians reenter the chamber to find that the energized servers are still functioning. Equipment and facilities show no signs of damage. Now we're ready for the water discharge test in the same fire scenario. As before, plastic sheets inside the same server cabinet are ignited, and technicians leave the room. ON SCREEN TEXT: Sprinkler system ON SCREEN TEXT: Cabinet temp. ON SCREEN TEXT: Ceiling temp. ON SCREEN TEXT: System pressure ON SCREEN TEXT: Air sensor alarm The blaze spreads out of control. MALE NARRATOR: Two minutes pass. Then three minutes. The heat of the fire rises to 91.9 degrees. And dense, black smoke fills the room. Finally after nearly four minutes, the sprinkler heads discharge. For 11 minutes, the room is deluged with water. Even so, the fire in the cabinet stubbornly refuses to go out. 15 minutes after ignition, a firefighter enters the chamber and puts out the remaining fire with a portable C02 extinguisher. In the aftermath of the test, the server room is in ruins. Ceiling and walls are coated with black soot. Hundreds of gallons of water pool on the floor. And the drives and other components inside the cabinets are damaged beyond repair. Imagine the lost time, lost revenue, and damage to your reputation had such an incident happened inside one of your server rooms. Shots reveal the brutal extent of the fire damage. How does Novec 1230 fluid work?

Novec 1230 fluid extinguishes a fire before it starts by rapidly removing heat. In a typical total flooding system, the fluid is stored as a liquid in cylinders pressurized with nitrogen. Automatic detection sensors trigger release when the fire is at the incipient stage, extinguishing it in mere seconds.

Novec 1230 fluid evaporates 50 times faster than water. In fact, you could soak a paperback book in a bath of Novec 1230 fluid and within a minute, pick it up and read where you left off.

In this video you’ll see a controlled test of a fire in a simulated data center. Watch to compare the performance of Novec 1230 fluid to a water sprinkler system.
