When an airplane is cruising through the sky, it's not the only thing traveling at incredible speeds. Every external component must stand up to that sort of erosion.
We've developed two powerful tools for the job: one for the manufacturing process, and one for repair. 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Film 8734NA, also called Cocure, is a polyurethane film designed to cure onto composite parts in production, protecting leading edges, engine components, and other highly exposed composite parts from the worst of the elements. It's far more durable than paint, protecting the parts beneath long after paint has worn away.
When parts do eventually need some attention, 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Repair Paste RP-2110 can restore them to full strength. It's a two-part polyurethane paste that is easy to apply and once it cures it becomes an erosion-resistant elastomer with excellent durability.
At the end of the day, the best way to keep aircraft up and running is by reducing the need for repairs in the first place.
