3M Health Information Systems has announced an agreement with the American College of Cardiology to pilot and test the 3M™ Clinical Discovery Engine, 3M’s advanced natural language processing technology.
The 3M Client Experience Summit is where healthcare leaders gather to research cool new stuff from 3M, see what’s happening in the 3M Data Science Lab, hear from peers about what’s working best and what steps they are taking to transform health care.

“We commend Secretary Azar for his commitment to drive value and quality in the U.S. healthcare system and for appointing Director Boehler to lead this important charge,” said Mark Colin, vice president and general manager, 3M Health Information Systems.
“3M shares Secretary Azar’s call for value-based transformation. 3M supported the Medicare Administration during the adoption of inpatient prospective payment in the 1980s, which revolutionized the nation’s healthcare payment system and set us forward on the path to value-based payment. Today, 3M works closely with more than 40 state Medicaid programs that are building on this approach to improve the quality of care for patients, as well as reduce costs.
“As a healthcare leader driving innovation through CMMI, Director Boehler will bring the entrepreneurial vision needed for this effort. There is much work to be done to improve the healthcare system for patients, providers, health plans, employers, and taxpayers--and we look forward to working with Secretary Azar, Director Boehler, and their teams on this vital goal,” Colin said.
3M’s philosophy for driving value-based care focuses on outcomes that are amenable to quality improvement efforts. Successful programs employ financial incentives, both penalties and rewards, that are substantial enough to induce behavior change. Key to a fair system is risk adjustment based on a clinical, categorical model as part of a coordinated program that is transparent and clinically precise.
