Extend the influence of clinical documentation integrity (CDI)

Are you leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to help your physicians deal with burnout? Can your clinical documentation integrity (CDI) teams prioritize work for scalability? Do you have clear visibility into the performance of your CDI program and its impact? It has never been more important to engage up front with clinicians and help CDI teams close the loop between clinical care and revenue integrity—all without increasing administrative burdens.

Wherever you are in your journey to advance your CDI program, 3M has the software and services to help you focus on quality, manage Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCCs) and denials, prioritize worklists, leverage AI to share clinical insights across team and enhance workflows for clinicians to create more time to care. We use AI technology to support back-end CDI workflows, providing evidence-based analysis, worklist prioritization and a clinically driven review process.

Solutions for CDI

As curators of data integrity, CDI professionals have an ever-increasing influence on the flow of data in both inpatient and outpatient settings. A joint 3M/ACDIS research report (PDF, 688 KB) says 91 percent of future CDI professionals will need to know the impact of diagnoses on quality care measures and 75 percent will be asked to review outpatient settings and services.

  • Hospitals and health systems have been at the CDI game a long time. Many organizations now leverage AI technology to automate and prioritize their inpatient efforts and enhance workflow across the care continuum. Innovative CDI leaders play a crucial role in accurately representing the patient populations they serve, improving productivity and cash flow, and ultimately driving quality outcomes. Learn more about how 3M supports inpatient CDI.

  • CDI started in acute care hospital settings. Now, as inpatient admissions decline, more care is covered in hospital clinics, emergency departments, physician offices, home health services and other outpatient settings. CDI teams are in a prime position to impact quality and revenue. But patient care outside the hospital walls brings unique logistical challenges—such as staff resources and training, coordination of documentation reviews and how to prioritize the increased volume of encounters. Learn more about how 3M supports outpatient CDI.

  • Schrubb & Murchland CDI Worklist Prioritization by Service Line Described Video (DEBBIE SCHRUBB) We wanted to make sure that our staff was working smarter and not harder, and getting opportunities to improve our physician documentation. (DESCRIBED VIDEO) 3M Science Applied to Life logo appears on screen with title text that reads, "CDI work list prioritization by service line." Debbie Schrubb begins speaking and title text appears on screen over video. Debbie Schrubb, director of HIM and documentation excellence, Kettering Health Network. (DEBBIE SCHRUBB) 3M helped us identify an opportunity with neurosurgery to really make a difference in our CC/MCC capture rate. Those surgeons tend to not document very well quickly, and just focus on the problem that they're maybe doing the surgery for the patient, and not the other diagnoses that may exist for the patients. (KATHLEEN MURCHLAND) Prioritization work list allowed them to sort their workflow by the number one thing that we were working on for an improvement process, which became the neurosurgery DRGs. (DESCRIBED VIDEO) Kathleen Murchland begins speaking, and title text appears on screen over video, Kathleen Murchland, manager of documentation excellence, Kettering Health Network. (KATHLEEN MURCHLAND) We had a CC/MCC capture rate that was very low against our peers, our 3M peers, plus the state of Ohio data. And it was a window of opportunity for us to speak one on one with those providers because they were engaging and gave us the opportunity to come to their service line meetings and teach documentation excellence, and then prioritize our work list. So, we started there. (DEBBIE SCHRUBB) So implementing the prioritization, we actually saw a positive increase in our CC/MCC capture rate in as little as three months. And we've continued that. It's probably been about nine months in total, and it's done nothing but get better. Over that time. (KATHLEEN MURCHLAND) Post-prioritization work list we submitted, after three months, it was about 266 cases that showed a case mix index increase of 0.419, which equated to about $800,000. Had we applied that formula to the previous 12 months prior it, equaled about $2.4 million increase that we would've obtained had we used it prior. (DEBBIE SCHRUBB) Actually, 3M, first of all, identified this opportunity for us, and then helped us work together to make sure that we had our data accurate and to show that the changes that we made made a statistical difference for us. They also helped us get everything all set up, and made sure that we knew how we were going to train our staff. So actually, 3M has been a great partner through this process. The next big hurdle is continuing this process and identifying where our next opportunity is. (KATHLEEN MURCHLAND) We're trying to get the phone to stop ringing. Lots of service lines are calling because they've heard about it. Our executives have celebrated our neurosurgery wins. There's been lots of shout-out announcements at the executive level. So other service lines are knock knocking on the door. (DESCRIBED VIDEO) 3M Science Applied to Life logo appears on screen and fades away.
