As a global manufacturer and supplier of health and safety products with labs in 36 countries and sales in 200 nations, 3M has its ear to the ground on emerging challenges – from natural disasters to disease outbreaks. As 2019 came to a close, we began to hear the news about a virus spreading in China. Teams in healthcare and personal safety begin to prepare for a possible pandemic, leveraging experience from previous events including H1N1, Ebola, SARS and MERS. By January, 3M was accelerating production of respirators around the world and collaborating with governments, distributors and businesses to respond to a pandemic.
3M Health Care has played a key role in the continuing fight against COVID-19, even beyond respirator production. Our collaboration with peers and governments, capabilities in science and data analytics, state-of-the-art manufacturing and experience in pandemic response have enabled us to make critical contributions to support healthcare workers and patients. Here are a few examples of our real-time response.
3M shares what they have learned so far and makes recommendations on identifying challenges and how to develop public-private partnerships to help solve them in the future. 3M published a paper, “Helping protect lives, save global economies by applying lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
