Healthcare workers deliver care while wearing personal protective equipment

    • As a global manufacturer and supplier of health and safety products with labs in 36 countries and sales in 200 nations, 3M has its ear to the ground on emerging challenges – from natural disasters to disease outbreaks. As 2019 came to a close, we began to hear the news about a virus spreading in China. Teams in healthcare and personal safety begin to prepare for a possible pandemic, leveraging experience from previous events including H1N1, Ebola, SARS and MERS. By January, 3M was accelerating production of respirators around the world and collaborating with governments, distributors and businesses to respond to a pandemic.

    • 3M Health Care’s critical contributions

3M Health Care has played a key role in the continuing fight against COVID-19, even beyond respirator production. Our collaboration with peers and governments, capabilities in science and data analytics, state-of-the-art manufacturing and experience in pandemic response have enabled us to make critical contributions to support healthcare workers and patients. Here are a few examples of our real-time response.

    • Collaboration
      • Our Health Information Systems business has supported an effort to make limited, de-identified data from participating hospitals available to a national clinical research network to help inform insights about treatments, resource needs, and potential areas for future research.
      • We use available Medicare research data to conduct COVID-related research to identify areas across the U.S. with higher rates of patients that are more likely to be vulnerable to negative health outcomes based on their clinical health status, which can be used to inform patient management, testing, and vaccination efforts during COVID.
      • Our Med Tech team partnered with Nissha – a global medical device company – to quickly create an anti-fog face shield that helped protect frontline workers while allowing them to see more clearly – giving them one less thing to worry about.
      • Our 3M adhesives have become a critical component in COVID-19 diagnostic tests, protecting DNA samples during testing.
      • We have developed COVID-19 population analysis tools for state Medicaid systems, health plans, and private payers. These tools can be utilized to guide planning.
      • Our Separation and Purification Sciences division has experienced high demand for products that enable blood oxygenation therapies, particularly components for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) devices.
      • Our biopharmaceutical filtration technology is used to help enable the production of life-saving vaccines and therapeutics.
      • Our 3M Science continues to be used to support the development of long-term solutions to the pandemic, including our filtration technology by biopharmaceutical companies working on the development of a vaccine.
      • We provide resources for healthcare workers to help them minimize their risk of skin breakdown due to PPE overuse.
