United Way

The Greater Twin Cities United Way celebrated its Centennial Year with 3M’s Chairman, President and CEO, Inge Thulin, the 2015 campaign leader. 3Mers answered the call to step up and help those in need. During the 2015 campaign, 3Mers donated $6.1 million and 53,000 hours of their time—both records for the program. These results earned 3M the Greater Twin Cities United Way "Best in Show" award for the second year in a row – the first time back-to-back win ever accomplished by a company in the Twin Cities. In addition, 3M Austin won the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Award from the United Way for Greater Austin.

  • 3M and DonorsChoose.org partnering to bring robotics to classrooms

3M and DonorsChoose.org partner to bring robotics to classrooms across the U.S.

“What did you do at school today?” Public school students had some amazing responses to this question as a result of their imaginative teachers and the 3M Robotics Innovation Challenge. In schools across the nation, students constructed robots to overcome environmental challenges like clearing a “landslide,” engineered alarms to safeguard their school supplies, programmed robots with sensors to race through a maze, and more.

Conducted in partnership with DonorsChoose.org, the Robotics Innovation Challenge was a three-phase program that challenged teachers to come up with creative ways to help students learn about robotics, rewarded the most innovative and impactful projects, and incentivized teachers in other schools to replicate the winning projects. Over the course of the Challenge, 3M committed $500K to bring STEM learning experiences to K-12 students – many of them living in under-resourced communities.

Over 1,090 hands-on robotics projects were funded through the Robotics Innovation Challenge, reaching 169,690 students in more than 840 schools across all 50 states. 3M is pleased to partner with organizations like DonorsChoose.org that seek to reduce educational inequities, increase access to STEM learning experiences, and encourage students to love science as much as we do!
