David Benjamin collaborated with 3M, utilizing our Specular Films to provide low-energy, low waste, highly effective lighting solutions at MoMA PS1.
Architect David Benjamin wanted to use materials that required as little waste, energy and carbon emissions as possible when creating his Hy-Fi structure at MoMA PS1. So he turned to 3M to help with brick development and light management. Together, we created bricks out of 3M Specular Film. Positioned at the top of the tower, these bricks produced a mirror effect that bounced sunlight down, serving as a low-energy light source to illuminate the interior. Those same brick forms were used to grow the rest of structure, a living biodegradable mushroom brick. The result is a structure that’s unique, innovative, compostable and absolutely beautiful.
