3M™ Brightness Enhancement Film (BEF) and 3M™ Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) are recycling, light management films that are used to increase the brightness of backlights used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Use these films to increase brightness of your display, which can translate to power savings and thermal management. 3M™ Enhanced Specular Reflector (ESR) can be used to increase the overall efficiency of the backlight.
BEF is a prismatic film that manages the angular output of light from the backlight. BEF uses refraction to compress the backlight’s output towards an on-axis viewer. BEF films can be used as single sheets, or as two sheets crossed at 90 degrees to each other.
BEF is available in different configurations that can be useful for specific application needs. BEF can also be used in conjunction with DBEF and ESR.
DBEF is a multilayer reflective polarizer. DBEF polarizes the backlight’s output so that it can transmit through the liquid crystal panel. Light of the wrong polarization is recycled into the backlight. Normally, the light would be absorbed, and lost, by the rear polarizer of the liquid crystal panel. By recycling the light, DBEF increases both brightness and the amount of light available over the entire LCD.
DBEF is available in different configurations that can be useful for specific application needs. DBEF can also be used in conjunction with BEF and ESR.
ESR is used as the backlight reflector for liquid crystal displays. ESR is a 100% polymer, thin film reflector that provides greater than 98% reflectance across the entire visible spectrum—which maximizes the light recycling efficiency of LCD backlights. ESR can be used in conjunction with BEF and DBEF.
Every automotive display has its unique challenges. We’ll help you work through the tighter restrictions and tougher specs that automotive displays demand—and arrive at the right display films solution for your application.
