    3M™ Silicon Nitride Cylindrical Roller Components offer high compressive strength, contact fatigue resistance, electrical resistivity and a low coefficient of friction. These properties make them an effective alternative to larger steel bearings in certain high-stress applications, including racecar gearboxes and machine tool spindles.

    Experience Higher Speeds, Reduced Friction with Less Noise
    Designed to operate at lower noise levels than steel components, 3M™ Silicon Nitride Cylindrical Roller Components run at higher speeds with reduced friction. 3M™ Silicon Nitride is used for this application because – unlike metal and coated metal – it resists abrasion, helping extend component service life. Our silicon nitride is a tough, lightweight ceramic material offering high stiffness and high contact strength. Our components made from silicon nitride weigh 60% less than comparable ones made from steel, and have significantly increased temperature resistance.

    Excellent Tribological Properties
    Our 3M silicon nitride cylindrical roller components exhibit high tribological compatibility, meaning they experience reduced friction when in contact with either cast iron or steel. They can operate at higher speeds and stress levels with less lubrication than metal rollers.

    Insights into the Advantages of the 3M Manufacturing Process
    3M silicon nitride materials and components are produced at 3M manufacturing plants, using unique compositions and processing techniques. 3M silicon nitride is processed by gas pressure sintering, which results in a fully dense and nonporous microstructure of interlocking needle-shaped grains. This process, combined with the natural toughness of silicon nitride, provides outstanding contact fatigue resistance and mechanical reliability.

    We have a patented grinding process and high-precision superfinishing and honing operations that allow us to machine OD/ID crown profiles on roller bearing elements. These grinding and crowning operations allow us to produce silicon nitride replacements for steel counterparts.
