- Improved tensile modulus and shear modulus allow for stronger, lighter and more durable parts
- Increases fracture toughness and compression strength while lowering thermal expansion
- Provides improved resistance to fracture and edge delamination
- Decreased z-axis CTE leads to less thermal distortion of curved laminates, or “spring-in”
- Low exotherm improves ability to cure thicker parts
- High hardness enables scratch resistance and enhances durability and part surface quality
- Reduced shrinkage makes it desirable for composite tool fabrication
- Work life of 5-7 days
3M™ Matrix Resin 3892 is an enhanced, nano-silica loaded epoxy resin for tooling prepreg. This tooling resin features high hardness, low exotherm, low CTE and high durability. 3M™ Matrix Resin 3892 is available on glass or carbon based reinforcements and can be cured under vacuum or autoclave pressure at 140°F (60°C).
Extend the Life of Your Tooling
- Harder, longer-lasting tools
- Composite tools with greater resistance to microcracking, scratching and exotherm
- Enhanced tooling design flexibility
- Significant improvements in tool manufacturing costs
Thermal cycling can wreak havoc on conventional composite tooling. Continuous exposure to extreme temperatures often leads to microcracking and edge delamination, which can weaken the seal and compromise part quality. 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg, featuring 3M's nano-enhanced thermo-setting epoxy resins, improves fracture resistance (KIC) and shear strength, significantly extending the effective life of your composite tools.
Expand Your Design Possibilities
Your design toolbox grows with 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg. You can now design tools with sharper angles and tighter dimensional tolerances without a new master, or create thicker tools without exotherm concerns. Tools made with 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg exhibit 47% less springback than conventional tooling, as well as less shrinkage and thermal expansion, so your tools are more accurate right off the master. You can also meet your dimension specifications longer, or require less sacrificial material to machine back to your specified dimensions—saving you time and money. 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg can be so flexible that it's possible to create tools directly from existing parts, eliminating the need for a new master. Because exotherm is virtually nonexistent, you don't have to worry about oven fires or tediously slow curing on designs that require thick tooling.

Cut Your Manufacturing Costs
Post-tooling adjustments and scratch repairs are the bane of composite manufacturers. Now you can create incredibly hard tools that reduce scratches with 3M™ Fortified Tooling Prepreg. Less scuffing and scratching means less part re-work and lower manufacturing costs long-term. Your tools stay in production, not in your repair area, and you can also create a much stiffer tool face that, in some cases, could require less structural support, shortening the time needed to make the tool.
