Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’ve got the answers.

  • 3M offers different types of Safety and Security window films, in several thicknesses and film construction, including patented micro-layer technology in our 3M™ Scotchshield™ Safety & Security Window Films Ultra Series. Most films are made using PET film technologies, although 3M also has a security window film, 3M™ Scotchshield™ Security Window Film S2400, that utilizes a polyurethane-base film.
  • Depending on the film used and 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment (IPA) Sealant, our warranties range between 7 and 15 years. Please refer to the Warranty Bulletin for 3M™ Window Films (Flat Glass Applications) and 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment (IPA) Sealant for complete details on warranty coverage, which can be obtained by contacting your 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer.

  • No, bullets will pass through the film. The film is intended to help keep broken glass fragments in the frame of the door or window and can help to delay forced entry when the 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment (IPA) Sealant is used along with the film.
  • No. While 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films, when combined with 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment (IPA) Sealant, can help delay potential intruders, the window film does not stop intruders.
  • 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films must be installed with the 3M™ Impact Protection Attachment (IPA) Sealant for all windstorm, break & entry, and explosion mitigation applications and for all spontaneous glass breakage applications on single pane tempered glass. Always consult with your 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer for complete information prior to product selection
  • We can send samples for review and, additionally, a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer may be able to provide a mock-up. We have also completed projects in other facilities, and we can attempt to locate a project close to you for a potential visit.
  • No, only 3M Authorized Window Film Dealers who are specifically trained can provide the installations.
  • The cost of installation varies and depends on numerous factors including, but not limited to, the film selected, the square footage of the installation, preparation costs, and the area of the country. Please contact your 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer for more information and to obtain a price quote for your installation. Please note that window films are less expensive than other alternatives like polycarbonate sheets or ballistic glass. Film installation generally does not disrupt operations within a building.
  • Yes, there are two options. You can use a film that has more opacity so that visibility is obscured all of the time (e.g. 3M™ White Matte Translucent Film). You can also use a metallic, reflective film that obscures vision from the brighter side of a window (e.g. 3M P18, where it is difficult looking into a building in bright daylight.)
  • Customer are advised to NOT wash newly installed windows for 30 days after installation to allow adhesion to build. After this 30 day period, customers can choose from a list of 3M recommended commercially available glass cleaners and cleaning materials, which include, but are not limited to, Windex® Original Glass Cleaner and 3M™ Glass Cleaner Concentrate #1. To help prevent scratching of the installed window film, customers should not use knives, scrapers, brushes or any abrasive cleaners or cleaning materials on the window. For more detailed information, please refer to the 3M™ Window Films Guidelines for Inspections, Cleaning and Maintenance Technical Bulletin Revision D, April 2024. A copy of these guidelines are included with your warranty.
  • We have several films that are clear and some that are tinted. All 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films will allow vision through them. Note that installed window film applications typically take thirty (30) days or longer to fully cure, i.e., for the liquid solution used in applying the 3M Window Film to fully evaporate. 3M recommends that purchasers wait a minimum of ninety (90) days prior to reporting any adhesion or optical appearance issues to allow for a full cure.
  • No. The application of graphics, appliques, tapes, suction cups, stickers, or other materials or objects to the film surface may damage the hard coat on the film. We suggest applying any such graphics and appliques to the opposing side of the glass instead of the filmed side.
  • 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films comes with a hard coat that resists abrasion. However, if you want to replace scratched film, the film and attachment adhesive will need to be removed and reapplied. Please refer to the Warranty Bulletin for 3M™ Window Films (Flat Glass Applications) for complete details on warranty coverage, which can be obtained by contacting your 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer.
  • 3M™ Safety & Security Window Films will perform throughout the warranted period and its functional life may be longer depending on use and environmental conditions. Please refer to the Warranty Bulletin for 3M™ Window Films (Flat Glass Applications) for complete details on warranty coverage, which can be obtained by contacting your 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer. The sealant may also be recommended for certain other spontaneous glass breakage, safety glazing, and seismic applications. Always refer to the 3M Technical Data Sheets and 3M Technical Specifications to determine whether these combinations are required. CAUTION: While 3M™ Window Films, when applied in accordance with 3M instructions, may help reduce the impact of flying glass shards under certain conditions and potentially delay intruders, these films do not prevent property damage, personal injury, or death. CAUTION: Window films are not bulletproof and not designed to stop intruders. Always consult with security professionals and a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer prior to selecting any window films to determine suitability for the intended application.
