Biodegradable*/Compostable

Biodegradable products, when disposed of properly, will completely break down and return to nature within a reasonably short period of time in a manner that doesn't harm the environment. Landfills are generally not conducive to biodegradability; however, composting is a common method of safely biodegrading products.

* Based on ASTM D6400-04, the Scotch-Brite Greener Clean Biodegradable Absorbent Sponge, the Biodegradable Expanding Soft Sponge, the Biodegradable Absorbent Cloth, and the Biodegradable Bamboo Wipe are all inherently biodegradable in a composting environment.

Renewable Content

Renewable resources can be replenished within a reasonably short period of time.

3M uses renewable resources in the manufacturing of the following Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Products:

> Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Scrub Sponge and Scour Pad: Natural agave fibers are used to replace 50% of the standard petroleum based fibers used to make a scrub sponge.

> Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Biodegradable* Bamboo Cloth and Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Biodegradable* Bamboo Wipes: The majority of the wipe is made from bamboo, a renewable resource.

Recyclable

Product or package must be able to be collected, separated or otherwise recovered from the solid waste stream.

For example, Scotch-Brite Greener™ Clean Soap Pad fibers are manufactured using recycled plastic bottles. In fact, one 12 oz plastic bottle makes enough fiber to produce approximately 6 soap pads.

The paperboard packaging on the Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Scour Pads, Soap Pads,Biodegradable* Bamboo Wipes and Biodegradable* Bamboo Cloth is 80 - 100% recyclable.

Reusable

Use a product multiple times to reduce the production and waste of one-time-use materials. For example the Scotch-Brite™ Greener Clean Biodegradable* Absorbent Sponge and Biodegradable* Expanding Soft Sponge can outlast 30 rolls of paper towels, and the Biodegradable* Absorbent Cloth can outlast 16 rolls of paper towels.
