Be Safe
Whenever you ride, you must always wear your cycle helmet and bright clothing.
Your helmet needs to fit properly. Make sure you wear the right size, and know how to put it on safely. And that includes using the chinstrap! Check your helmet has a British Kitemark® or has the EC safety standard number EN1078 – this shows that the helmet is well made and will help protect your head.
But what else should you wear?
You don't need to be going fast for a fall to really hurt! Coming off your bike can cause a nasty graze or cut. The best clothes to wear are ones that will protect your skin. And dressing for safety can look good:
Jeans or cargo pants are tough and great protection for your legs. Remember to use ankle
clips if they're baggy
Wear a long-sleeved top that covers your arms. It might be a t-shirt, sweatshirt or jacket,
depending on the weather
Protect your hands – cycle gloves have padding that will protect you in a fall.
If you are riding off-road, why not get elbow and knee protectors as well? Professional riders use
them as well as gloves, since if you are off road, you are more likely to take a tumble.
