3M™ Clinical Risk Grouping (CRG) Software
Using demographic data, diagnosis codes and procedure codes, 3M
Clinical Risk Grouping (CRG) Software helps you identify and
classify patients into clinically meaningful groups for risk
adjustment. CRGs relate the historical clinical and demographic
characteristics of an individual to the amount and type of
healthcare resources that an individual will consume in the
future. Thus, CRGs provide a tool for prospective planning. This
provides increased incentives for health plans to treat those
patients at high risk, and promotes financial and clinical
efficiency in care delivery.
CRGs are a powerful tool for targeting cases for care management,
tracking patients over time, profiling providers, and enhancing the quality
of the care delivered.

Population Based Tools
Expenditures for healthcare services represent an increasingly large
amount of funds. High healthcare expenditures create a financial burden for
Hospitals, Regional Health Authorities and Provincial Governments.
The 3M Clinical Risk Groups are a clinical model in which each
individual is assigned to a single mutually exclusive risk group which
relates the historical clinical and demographic characteristics of the
individual to the amount and type of healthcare resources that individual
will consume in the future. Since the Clinical Risk Groups, or CRGs, are
clinically based, they create a language that links the clinical and
financial aspects of care. The CRGs were designed to serve as the
foundation of management systems and was developed through a highly
iterative process that combined extensive clinical input with evaluation
and verification from historical data.
3M HIS has developed a classification system for accurately describing
the health status of individuals. This development focused on creating a
management tool for hospitals, health authorities and provinces, which
allows them to deliver care efficiently and effectively. This
classification system is not only a management tool but also can be used as
a basis for risk adjusting payments. CRGs are risk groups that can be used
as the basis of risk adjustment in a payment-based system and also are
sufficiently clinically precise enough that they can be used as a
management tool for both the Regional Health Authorities and Provincial
Health Ministries/Departments. Since the CRGs are clinically based, they
create a language that links the clinical and financial aspects of care.
Thus, CRGs are designed to serve as the foundation of management
systems.
