  • working with loose hay in an open field is not as dangerous as working indoors - the risk increases when moldy bales of hay or straw are opened inside closed barns or cowsheds.

  • when a moldy bale is broken up to feed livestock or lay bedding, large amounts of dust and mold are released

  • the risk of lung damage is highest when crops have been stored in damp conditions and during the months when crops are being handled indoors

  • deer mice waste in the straw or hay could expose you to the Hanta Virus
