- the greatest danger exists during agitation and pumping as well as entry into spreader tanks, especially if manure has remained stagnant for extended periods of time
- agitating manure stored under a barn can force the gas above floor level and could kill all animals and humans in that area
- exposure to high concentrations can result in the complete arrest of respiration
- exposure to lower concentrations may result in nausea, upset stomach, belching, coughing and eye irritation
