  • never attempt entry into the top or bottom of a sealed silo without a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)* , and a life line attached to someone outside (follow procedures as directed by the authority having jurisdiction in your area)

  • do not expect air purifying filtering face piece or elastomeric face piece respirators to protect you from these gases - they will not work

  • always seek immediate medical attention if you have been exposed to NO2 or CO2 - even for a short period of time

  • ensure your oxygen limiting silo is properly sealed so it will not permit NO2 or CO2 to drain into existing structures

  • avoid the plant material risks mentioned above
This information was compiled from materials provided by the Farm Safety Association, and is only a general overview of the risks and prevention strategies. For more information on how to protect yourself by monitoring crop treatment, ventilating the silo and heeding warning signs, please contact the Farm Safety Association at 1-800-361-8855 and request Fact Sheet No. F-010.
